Monday- Introduction “Getting to Know You” activities
Tuesday – Requirements : Students need to bring a packet of paper, 100 lined note cards,
and a box of Kleenex. Students will earn 50 points if these items are turned in by Friday.
Wednesday- “Getting to Know You” writing assignments
Thursday- Syllabus and film permission hand-outs- Students need to have parents/guardians sign these and return them
by next Wednesday. Introduction to Zodiac signs and Greek myths.
Block 4- Homework assignment- Students will write a one-page letter. The assignment requires students
to pretend they are 40 years-old and to write back to their teenage- self with some
great advice.
Friday - Block 1 and 2- “40 year –old writing assignment”(Wow! Is that overdue. J) due on Monday.
Writing assignments organized and placed in student’s writing portfolio. All assignments are collected
and placed in these portfolios throughout the semester.

Week of Aug.20-24
Monday- Block 1 & 2 homework assignment due. Discussion of homework assignment in Block 4.
Introduction to Jane Schaffer terminology. On Friday, students will be tested on the terminology.
Further discussion on Zodiac constellations and Greek Myths. This discussion precedes the reading of
The Odyssey next week.
Tuesday- Students will work on constructing topic sentences.
Group work on constellations and Greek Myths.
Wednesday- Students will work on 1 chunk paragraphs. Block 4 -Homework:” Dangers of Binge Drinking” 2 chunk paragraph.
Students will use a newspaper article as their resource. Due Thursday.
Greek Myths- Students will write literary responses to the myths, “Arachne” and “Golden Touch.”
Introduction to Vocab. Lesson 1. Students copied the 10 words and definitions in their foldables.
Thursday- Students will use library computers to complete a web quest on Greek Mythology. Quiz tomorrow on

Week Aug. 27-Aug. 31
Monday- Assistant Principal, Mr. Bornscheuer, gave students a presentation on rules and policies
governing the district and school campus. Block 2 students need to return handbook quiz to school tomorrow.
Greek project due tomorrow. (75 points)
Tuesday- Students will select a book for outside reading. The book report (due Sept. 28) will be discussed.
Students will complete writing exercises in-class & will be given a worksheet to be completed after
the viewing of “Gods & Goddesses.”
Wednesday- Students will complete in-class writing exercises which stress paragraph unity. Lesson 1 vocabulary is reviewed.
Viewing of “Gods & Goddesses” continues.
Thursday- Students will complete the worksheet on “Gods & Goddesses.” Vocabulary review.
Friday- Vocabulary test on Wednesday. Students are assigned pages 890-891 in their Literature text. Quiz
on the reading Tuesday.

Bk. 4- Students were assigned rewrites on their essay. Due Friday. Students have the opportunity to improve their scores by making the corrections. Review of vocab. words for the final.
Students read “ A Christmas Memory” in their text. They completed Connect to Lit. and Comp. Check in class. Students were assigned a personal narrative. The rough draft must be completed by Tues.
Final drafts will be typed in class.
Tuesday- Bk. 1 & 2 Students will complete rough drafts of their essay in class. It will be typed in class on Wednesday- rough draft must be completed in order to have this opportunity. Crossword review puzzle completed in class.

Students will write their rough drafts this week on a topic of their choice. This is a four-paragraph essay. The rough draft must be completed by the 19th in order to get the opportunity to write a final draft. Jan. 29-Feb. 2
29- Students discuss the power of persuasion after viewing, "The Wave."
No homework Students have the opportunity to rewrite final essays to improve their
score. I returned these papers back to them today.
30- Students received the next 10 vocabulary words. Study guides and paragraph were completed in class. On Friday there will be a quiz on vocab. words and Chapters 12-16 in Z for Zach.
31- Grammar worksheet on capitalization will be completed in class.
We will begin "To Kill the Mockingbird" next week. In order to prepare students for this classic, we will be discussing the Great Depression. Students will do a short PowerPoint presentation about this period in history.
1- Students will be able to complete their presentations in class.
Final rewrites of the persuasive essay must be turned in by Friday. Grades for the progress reports are due by 2:00 on Friday. These rewrites will help students' grades tremendously!
2- Students will deliver their presentations. Quiz on the vocab. words and Chap. 12-16 on Z for Zach.
Feb. 5-9
Feb. 5 - Students did not have the opportunity to deliver their presentations, so this will be done today. Depending on the time, we will discuss the Great Depression and the trial of the Scottsboro Boys. This trial inspired Harper Lee to write "To Kill the Mockingbird."
Feb. 6- Scottsboro trial discussion with the viewing of a documentary
Packets for "To Kill the Mockingbird" will be distributed tomorrow.These are VERY important. The work will need to be completed. Students are responsible for this packet and all the information.
Feb. 7- We will begin to read the novel. Vocab. lesson 10 study guides will be completed.
The quiz on these vocab. words will be on Feb. 14. Chapter 17-22 quiz on "Z for Zach" will be on the 16th.
**An 8 sent. paragraph for homework was assigned. This is in the Mockingbird packet and will factor in the grade at the conclusion of the unit.

March 1- I will be at a seminar in North Carolina Thursday and Friday. Students will work on group work on Chap. 10-13 in "T>K>A>M.
March 2- Students will NOT take vocab. quiz or "T.K.A.M." quiz until Monday. I didn't have enough time for discussion or review due to the shorter periods this week. Students will work in class on the worksheets provided, and start their Maycomb Map , if there is time.

March 5- Students were given extra time to complete worksheets. Vocab. quiz was postponed until tomorrow. Students reviewed words and were given time to complete sentences and paragraphs for Lesson 11. Students should also fill in Chap. 10-13 study guides in their "T>K>A>M" packet.
March 6-(1/2 Day) Vocab. quiz. Discussion on Chap. 10-13. Quiz on those chapters tomorrow.
Students will be given time to work on Maycomb map in class. This project should be worked on outside of class in order to meet the March 23rd deadline.
March 7-
This course fulfills two requirements: English and AIMS reading and writing preparation. Students will receive a grade in the reading course for a timed writing on "The Invisible Children." Students will watch a portion of this documentary, which is about the abduction of children by militants in Uganda. You can investigate this subject on www.invisiblechildren. com Students will write their reactions to the film in a timed-writing
assignment.
March 8- Block 2- Chapter 14 was read in class. Quiz tomorrow on this chapter.
Block 4- Bogged down on the study guide, so we will read this chapter tomorrow.
Kudos to both classes on the homework assignments. The responses I received were the best I have read this year! They were well-expressed. I was glad to hear how this film touched so many of you emotionally. Well-done. Quizzes on 10-13 were completed today.
March 9- Another tough teaching day. We have an assembly, so classes will be shorter. I hope to discuss Chapter 15 & 16 during the period. Remember-your maps will be due next Friday. I would work on these over the weekend and get them done early. This is an easy assignment. It's supposed to be, so you can bring up your grade before the end of next week.
March12- Read "T.K.A.M." Chap. 15 & 16 quizzes tomorrow. Filled in study guides.
March 13- Read Chap. 17 Filled in study guides Worked on maps in class. Quiz tomorrow on this chapter.
March 14- I will be at a district seminar. The substitute will allow students to work on their maps. Students will have a worksheet on Chapter 18 to complete. Quiz on Thursday. Students will also start Vocab. Lesson 13 if time allows.
March 15- Maps are due Friday. No late ones accepted because grades go in today. We read 19 & 20 in class. Students will be quizzed on Chap. 20 tomorrow.
March 16- Maps due. Grades are turned in today! Quiz on Chap. 20. We will read Chap. 21 & 22 in class. Students will have Chapter 23 & 24 as homework. Quiz on these chapters Monday.
March 19- Quizzes on Chap. 23 & 24. Read 25 & 26 in class. Worked on Lesson 12 Study guides and vocab. paragraph.
March 20- Quizzes on Chap. 25 & 26 Read Chap. 27 & 28 in class. Students need to read Chap. 29 as homework. This chapter is only 4 pages. Study guides need to be completed for these chapters. Quiz tomorrow on 27, 28, 29. We will finish the book tomorrow and review for the final on Thursday. Students will need to have packets completed and turned in on Friday.
March 21- Quiz on 27, 28, 29. We will finish the book in class and review for tomorrow's final.
On Friday, we will celebrate the completion of the novel with a Miss Maudie's tea. Students have signed up to bring Southern dishes to our party.

April 2- Welcome back. We finished the rest of the "To Kill a Mockingbird" movie. We are ready to start our essay tomorrow. Students will have a choice for this four-paragraph essay.
1. Trace the theme of the mockingbird throughout the novel and analyze what the bird symbolizes or represents.
2. Scout and Jem mature considerably through the course of the novel. What developmental changes do they go through, and what causes these changes?
3. Analyze the relationship between Boo Radley and the children. How does this relationship change throughout the book? What are the causes of the developments in this relationship?
We will discuss these and brainstorm on the questions Tuesday. Students must have a rough draft due by Thursday. I will not accept a final draft without a rough. I will edit this and return it to the students on Monday. The final will be due on the 13th.
April 3- We will discuss the essays and brainstorm on ideas. Students will find the CDs for their essay. Students will be given an opportunity to work on this in class. The rough draft is due on Thursday. Review vocab. words. I'm sure they have forgotten these by now. We will spend the next few days on these. The quiz is Thursday.
Homework: Students brainstormed and came up with possible thesis statements for essay topics. They need to choose one thesis and use it in an introductory paragraph. This will require them to write five or six sentences before the thesis. These should be attention grabbers and tie into the thesis.
April 4- Review vocab. words. We will work on the rough draft. This essay must be MLA formatted. Homework due. Students will work on body paragraphs.
April 5- Vocab. quiz will be on Monday. Rough drafts are due on Monday. We will spend some time on peer editing . Those students with completed rough drafts will be given time to type these during class time. In order to take advantage of this, students need to come to class prepared.
Rough draft requirements:
Intro. ( Thesis statement is the last sentence of this paragraph.) This paragraph should have about six sentences.
