The Aire Libre Title I Program:

The Aire Libre Title I Program is a Federally Sponsored Program that provides funding for targeted grade levels. Grades 4-6 are the focus of this program at Aire Libre. We work hard to increase services that will help improve the educational success of our students. Some of the programs we provide are:

Jump Start: 3-6 grade Title I students received a 2 week "Jump Start" for the
2010/2011 school year.  Students received school supplies for the new school year.
Teachers helped students get organized and reviewed basic reading and
math skills.  Students and teachers read daily and students enjoyed activities such as
"Reader's Theatre," "Read Naturally," "Math and Reading Bingo," and much more!

Parent Meetings: Parents are an integral part of a student’s success. We recognize that
and strive to include parents in all areas of their child's education. Some ways we do this
is by providing informational meetings about the Title I program, monthly Title I
meetings and get acquainted breakfasts. All parents are welcome to attend.

Parent Math Academy: Our Parent Math Academy provides lessons for parents that
help them gain a clearer understanding of their child's Math homework and teaches
skills that will enable parents to help their children more effectively with homework.

Parent Literacy Nights: Our Title I Reading Department will hold literacy nights that                 will provide parents with materials and strategies they can use to help their children
              become better readers.

Reading Tips from the Aire Libre Reading Room:

The most important thing you can do as a parent to help your child become a better reader is to make sure your child sees you actively reading and/or writing every day. Modeling good reading and writing behaviors helps your child see the importance of reading and writing in every day life.

Since reading is a complex process, no single strategy works best all of the time. The seven comprehension reading keys that follow, from the book:  7 Keys to Comprehension, How to Help Your Child Read It and Get It, by Susan Zimmermann and Chryse Hutchins,  Three Rivers Press, 2003, will give you some strategies you can use to help increase your child's understanding of what they are reading and ultimately help them become a more successful reader.

Key 1: Sensory Images - good readers create visual, auditory or sensory images to
increase understanding and relate to personal feelings and emotions

Key 2: Background Knowledge - good readers link what they know or have
experienced to what they are reading

Key 3: Questioning - good readers generate questions to clarify meaning

Key 4: Drawing Inferences - good readers use questions linked to what they know or
predict will happen to deepen understanding

Key 5: Determining Importance - good readers identify what information is important in
a story or text they are reading and what information is not

Key 6: Synthesizing - good readers check for understanding while reading

Key 7: Fix-up Strategies - good readers use reading strategies, such as rereading,
reading ahead and questioning to understand the meaning of unknown words or
               phrases

                                                                                                                      Zimmermann, pg 5-6.
