HELPFUL TIPS
Communicating with Young Teens
*Listen.  Encourage your teen to express ideas and opinions freely to promote a relationship of mutual respect.
*Set reasonable boundaries and limits.  As teens grow and mature it helps them to have clear rules.  Rules are pivotal and help set the scene for living in society.
*Establish logical consequences for poor choices.  Teens must take responsibility for their actions.
*Select your "battles" wisely.  Choose the important issues to avoid treating minor mishaps as major catastrophes.
*Talk when you are calm.  When emotions are flaring, call a time-out.  Count to ten or go for a quick walk to clear your head.  Don't try to have a discussion with your teen when either of you is angry.
*Seek professional help with serious problems.  Do not try to handle such problems by yourself.
*Take the time to engage in meaningful conversation with your team to share daily events.  Have fun and be involved with your teen.
*Remember you are the most important role model for your teen.  You have the wonderful opportunity to be a positive example in your teen's daily life.
