Welcome to Boulder Creek Elementary School's
Physical Education Home Page!
Home of the Bobcats
Boulder Creek Elementary School is home to more than 700, K-6 students in sunny, Phoenix, AZ.
My goal for this website is to educate the parents about our physical education program at Boulder Creek Elementary School, provide a physical education resource for the students and the community, and to be a resource for those within the teaching profession of elementary physical education.
Upcoming events:
District Field Day - Our school has district field day March 10th, 2010, at North Canyon High School. Students that qualify for district field day, and meet the minimum grade requirements (C or better in all subjects), will participate on this day.
Reminders:
Please remember to have your student wear proper PE shoes that fit securely (see below for examples), wear socks, and bring a water bottle to class. Students who fail to wear proper footwear to PE class 3 times will receive a Make Your Day slip as a reminder to wear the correct shoes for their own safety.
PE Expectations:
To make PE a learning, successful environment for both the student and the teacher I have several expectations.
1. Safety is # 1! PE is not a static environment. Learning takes place not only through static instruction but through movement as well. It is essential for any PE teacher to be able to manage the physical environment due to the potential for injury. Therefore, my lesson plans are designed around what is safe for the student. I expect every student that comes to PE class to act and move responsibly, and to be dressed appropriately.
2. There are 3 reasonable rules all students are expected to follow while in PE class:
- Respect Others
- Respect Yourself
- Respect Your Environment (equipment, etc.)
3. Participation is a must! My lesson plans are designed to have all students engaged all the time. Success comes from a student's participation doing skills, interacting with peers and teachers, and through active discussion of health-related topics.
4. Students who come to PE with medical concerns MUST have a note from:
- The parent/guardians
- The doctor
- School Nurse
Students who come to class with notes of exemption from PE will still participate by watching from the sidelines making notes about class on our "From the Sidelines" sheet to keep them continually involved in the PE lesson for that day.
5. The proper footwear in PE is required by all students to maximize their potential for physical success and minimize their potential for physical harm. Safety is my #1 concern in class. A hurt student is an unhappy student. Proper footwear are considered those shoes that will allow your child to run, jump and participate in the unit themes of:
- Yoga
- Step Aerobics
- Health/Fitness
- Soccer
- Jump rope/Hula Hoop related skills
- Track and Field (running, relays, long jump, high jump, etc.)
- Kickball
- Volleyball
- Dodging, running, and fleeing activities
- Basketball
- T-ball/Softball
Examples of improper footwear are:
- Loosely tied Skate boarding shoes
- Heelies (yes, even with the wheel taken out!)
- High sole shoes (of more than an inch)
- Sandals/Crocs/flip-flops
Pictures of IMPROPER shoes:
Shoes are untied, don't cover the whole foot, or don't provide proper support for active movements.
Pictures of PROPER shoes:
Shoes are securely tied, whole foot is covered, and shoes provide proper support for active movements.
What we are currently working on in class:
We are currently working on Track and Field skills in PE class. Track and Field is a great way for students to learn an individual sport, sportsmanship, as well as a variety of physical skills. There is a lot of running in Track and Field, so make sure your students have on proper footwear, and bring their water bottle to PE class.
**I have had several students ask where they can get a pedometer, I am so excited they love it! You can get pedometers at several stores, Target, Walmart, and sporting goods stores such as Sports Authority, and Dick's also have them.
