EIGHTH GRADE SYLLABUS
This is a semester course in which students will learn about Fine Arts, Commercial Arts, and Alternative Arts. Students will learn how to draw, paint, and design compositions. Some of the topics covered in this class are: graphic design, typography, and fashion. Art history, math, science, language arts, and social studies will be integrated within the visual arts curriculum in order to meet state and national art education standards.
Techniques and concepts students will learn this quarter are:

  • How to create realistic portraits (human faces) in both frontal and profile views.
  • How to create value (shading to make the illusion of 3-D objects).
  • How to create the illusion of 3-D space by showing perspective.
  • How to create realistic figures (the human body).
  • How to mix colors and create color schemes.
  • How to draw from life.
  • How to create good designs.
  • How to critique their own artwork and the work of others.
  • How to take notes using the Cornell note-taking format.
  • How to effectively use type in design.
  • How to create a cohesive fashion line.
  • How to use markers, paint, colored pencil, chalk pastel, oil pastel and graphite.
  • Students will learn about different artists and various art eras.

SUPPLIES; DEVELOPMENTALWORKBOOK: Supplies students will need are:  #2 pencils with erasers, a three-subject notebook, and a good attitude. Students will store all of the warm-ups, class notes, quizzes, preliminary art, and written work in their notebooks. Notebooks will be checked at the end of every week. 10 points at the end of every other week.        

VISUAL ART PROJECTS: Students will be required to complete all visual art projects.  100 points

LATE WORK: Late work will be accepted: for each day it is late, one full letter grade is dropped.

HOMEWORK: Students will have approximately 3 homework assignments per quarter (students should post homework in their developmental workbooks). 25 points

CRITIQUE: Students will be required to participate in 2 group critiques. Students will be expected to talk about art as well as make art! 25 points

QUIZZES: Students will have OPEN NOTE, short-answer quizzes at the end of each unit. (5 questions) 50 points

CLASS PARTICIPATION: Students will be expected to participate in all class discussions and activities.  25 points
