Accelerated Reader FAQ
What is AR?
The Accelerated Reader (AR) program allows students to practice and improve their reading skills by having the students to pick their book within their reading level.
Students first take a STAR test which will give them their reading ability level. Students use this range to help them find appropriate books for them to enjoy. 20-30 of class time a day are devoted to silent AR reading time. Students are also expected to be reading at home 15-30min a night.
What's a point goal?
Each book is given a point value. The point value is based on the length and difficulty of the book.
When can students take a quiz?
Because the quizzes are open book, they must be taken at school with Mr. Smith present. The classroom has two computers that may be used.
Where can students find a good AR book?
AR has quizzes for most books. Our Vista Verde library has a wide selection, but books may also be found at public libraries, Mr. Smith's classroom library, bookstores, amazon.com, and by ordering through the classroom Scholastic catalog.
How do I know for sure if a book is AR?
How are AR grades determined?
There are two goals: 1. Point goal
2. To earn an 85% or better average on tests taken
The two are averaged together to find the earned AR goal.
Example:
Joe earned 20 points out of 25 and had a test average of 87%
1. 20 divide by 25 is 80%. He reached 80% of his point goal.
2. 87% is above goal set of 85%. He earns 100% of his goal.
The two are averaged together. 80+100 =180 and 180 divided by 2 is a 90%. Joe earned an A- in Accelerated Reading this quarter.
