Quote The story of America isn't about people who quit when things got tough. It is about people who kept going, who tried harder, who loved their country too much to do anything less than their best. It is the story of students who sat where you sit 250 years ago, and went on to wage a revolution and found
this nation.Students who sat where you sit 75 years ago who overcame a Depression and won a world war; who fought for civil rights and put a man on the moon.†Sudents who sat where you sit 20 years ago who founded Google, Twitter and Facebook and changed the way we communicate with each other. - President Barack Obama |
Student Assignment Planner
Class starts every week with the students copying down information from the assignment board to their planners. They always have written down what we cover each day, when things are assigned, and when things are due.
Homework Expectations:
Each week, there will be one assignment that is specifically to be done as homework. The assignments will differ every week, but can always be found on the assignment planner. Your student will also have homework when they are:
- completing unfinished classroom exercises,
- making up an absence, or
- reading their independent novel.
Accelerated Reader:
Each quarter, students will have an individual point goal for reading individually. They will be reading everyday in class 15-25min, and they need to be reading at home 10-30min. Students have a tan reading log to keep track of their reading.
Current Units
Basic Writing Skills
Each class period is started with a Basic Writing Skills warm-up. The skills include punctuation, sentence formatting, paragraph structure, etc. Your student will have a spiral notebook in the classroom that they will use to complete the warm-up and to write down the language rules as we learn them. On Wednesdays, the class will have a short quiz covering the rules.
Writing Assignments
Each quarter will have a mandatory writing project that must be turned in or no quarter grade will be given. For this quarter, the mandatory writing subject will be to write a personal letter to Mr. Smith. Other assignments this quarter will focus on paragraph structure and writing conventions.
Group Reading
Along with short stories, articles, and poems, our class will be reading The Girl Who Owned a City which is about children surviving together after the adults go missing. We'll be focusing on plot structure, reading strategies, and the various forms of writing.
Colored Grammar
Using different colored crayons to highlight and underline, the students will be studying the parts of a sentence.
AVID Strategies
To help prepare students for high school, weíll include activities from AVID's Strategies for Success curriculum. These lessons will teach the skills necessary to be a great student. As part of the focus, students are expected maintain a 3-ring binder to hold class work for all their classes. The organization of their binder will be graded monthly.
Study Island
Study Island is an online tutorial program. We will be in the school computer lab every other week completing quizzes. If a student misses a quiz due to an absence, they are still required to make it up. They may access studyisland.com at home, on the library computers, or in the classroom computers.
