(This newsletter was sent home on Jan. 1.)

Most parents opted to not come in for a parent/teacher conference last week.  This is partially due to already having had many annual review IEP conferences with parents this year.  Another reason is due to our communicating with each other through the many vehicles of communication.  Keep checking your student’s planner for notes and the point slip daily to see how the school day went.  These methods of communication all add up to maintaining strong communication between the school and home.

The first CBI destination for the second semester has been to McDonald's.  The second CBI destination this month is to Chompie's at Paradise Valley Mall.  The students have enjoyed eating at a restaurant for breakfast, and practicing the life skills studied in class.

We have all been impacted by the devastating images caused by the earthquake last month in Haiti.  Thank you for your donations for the DSMS Help Haiti drive.  An important life skill for all students is learning how even the smallest donation goes a long way.

Valentine’s Day falls on a Sunday this year.  I am not planning a Valentine's Day party, but your student is welcome to bring in a treat to share on Friday, February 12.  If your student brings in a treat, please remember the county health regulations for serving food at school;  any food that is brought into the school for students must come from a commercial source, items are not to be handmade, and gloves must be worn when handing out food.  I have a supply of rubber gloves in my classroom.

Did you know that DSMS has two half-time school nurses?  Nurse Roby and Nurse Singer will be guest speakers this month.  Attached to this newsletter is a memo from them containing information about their upcoming presentation on healthy habits, including personal grooming.  This presentation is directly related to many of the life skills that are included in the Arizona Standards.

Our classroom supply of tissues is running low.  The tissues are being used up due to colds and allergies.  If you are able to send in just one box of tissues, that should get us through the end of the school year.  Donations are always appreciated!

Please note the following important dates:

Tuesday, February 9 • Early Dismissal, Teacher Inservice 12:00 p.m., (no lunch)

Monday,  February 15• No School - Presidents' Day

Monday, March 1 • notMYkid presentation - Safe Dating
Congratulations to the following “Students of the Week”:

Danny - week of 1/4
Jessica - week of 1/11
Darby - week of 1/19
Hannah - week of 1/25

Happy February birthday to Danny whose birthday is February 11!

The second semester is off to a great start.  All of the students are demonstrating progress with their academic goals, and with their work habits and study skills.  This is largely due to your involvement.  Thank you for all of your help, support, and cooperation!
