Welcome to Eighth Grade Social Studies!
Eighth grade social studies covers the Arizona State Standards based on the themes of American History, World History, Government, Geography, and Economics. These five themes are incorporated throughout a curriculum emphasizing the historical foundations and democratic principles that framed our Constitution and led to our form of democracy. The history from WWII to the contemporary world is also studied.
1. Grading: The grade for this class will be based on class assignments, quizzes, class projects, and tests. Tests are 100 points, quizzes are 20 points each, and daily assignment points vary as to the specific assignment. Your child will be expected to spend approximately 20 minutes of homework time on Social Studies three to four nights each week.
Homework is never assigned over weekends or holidays, the exception being absence make-up work or missing/late or incomplete assignments.
Grades will be based on the accumulation of points.
All assignments will be due at the beginning of class on the assigned due date unless the student is absent from school. Incomplete assignments must be completed to receive credit. An “I” will be entered into Power School for incomplete assignments and will be valued as a “0”. Once completed, incomplete or missing assignments may earn 60% of the total points earned if turned in before taking the section quiz.
Late “extra credit” work will not be accepted.
No points will be awarded for late extra credit work.
2. Absences: Students will be given one day to make up work missed for each day he/she is absent due to illness. Those students absent due to a trip or vacation or suspension will be required to have the work completed the day they return to class.
All assignments are posted on the pvlearners.net website.
*Special consideration will be given to students suffering prolonged acute illness or injury. Please contact me to set alternative assignments and due date schedule if this should be necessary.
3. Assignments: All assignments are displayed on the pvlearners.net website.
Only assignments written in pencil and in legible handwriting will be accepted. All answers must be in the Q in A format. That is, the question must be written into the answer and in a complete sentence for credit.
Example: What are the names of the two houses of Congress?
Answer: The two houses of Congress are
A. The Senate
B. The House of Representatives.
4. Supplies: Each student will need a three ring binder with loose-leaf notebook paper, pencils with erasers, and a red ink pen for correcting purposes for this class. Highlighters or markers are not acceptable for grading.
Only red ink pens may be used.
5. Work Expectations: All work must be written in a clear and legible form on loose-leaf notebook paper. We will discuss proper assignment format in class. Errors and corrections must be erased and written
correctly. Misspellings, doodlings, and crossed out words and sentences will reduce the number of points earned on an assignment.
All submitted work must be the student's best effort
and display pride in the presentation.
6. Anecdotal Records: Each student will have a file in the classroom where he/she will be required to keep all corrected work, quizzes, and tests. It will be your child's responsibility to make sure his/her work is filed. Time will be given for the filing of corrected work when appropriate to do so. This accumulated work will be sent home at the end of each semester.
7. EXTRA CREDIT: An extra credit worksheet will be given out the day before each chapter test. These worksheets earn approximately 10-15 points that will be directly applied to the test score. Only those students in class both the day before the test and the day of the test are eligible to earn these extra credit points, the exception would be attendance at a school function such as a chorus field trip during the class period. Also, throughout the year, a
variety of projects and activities will be offered for extra credit. The students are encouraged to participate in all the extra credit activities.
8. Citizenship: The "Make Your Class" citizenship program is used at Explorer. It is preferable that all students make wise decisions as to their behavior, thus guaranteeing a successful experience here at Explorer.
9. Contact: Please check Power School frequently to monitor progress. Grades are entered daily for Social Studies. If you wish to contact me or need clarification on ANYTHING, the fastest and easiest way to get an answer or response is email:
An email may be sent from the schoolnotes.com website as well. Just click on my name to activate an email form. Students must use pvlearners.net to contact their teachers.
(The District server has been known to be off line over weekends so not always is a weekend email responded to in a timely fashion.)
