Accelerated Reader
What is
Accelerated Reader?

Boys Head shot.jpg
Accelerated Reader (known as "AR") is a district-wide reading program which is designed to help "accelerate" the process of  becoming a good reader. Accelerated Reader allows students to select books at their own interest and reading level, and then test their understanding of the material with an online comprehension quiz. This gives students and their teacher immediate feedback as to how they are doing, so they can build on their skills and continually adjust to reflect ability. Eagle Ridge's Accelerated Reader has over 100,000 titles available, including both fiction and non-fiction books. (Not all schools have the same book titles available, so be sure to check the website for each school, if you are checking for students outside of Eagle Ridge).

This link will take you to our AR Website so your child can check book point values and monitor their quarterly goal progress.  They are only able to take tests, however, during our regular school hours and from the school's website.

What are Points and Book Levels
Points basically reflect the length of the book, ranging from .5 to over 100 points. A book with a value of .5 points would probably take a student 15-30 minutes to read, and a book assigned a value of 100 points or more might take them the whole quarter to finish. Accelerated Reader states that one point corresponds to approximately one hour of reading.
Book Level measures the difficulty of a book, taking context and vocabulary into account.
The students are tested at the beginning of the school year to determine each child's reading level, and will be guided to select books in that range.

How Does Accelerated Reader Figure into the Students' Grades?
The students are required to complete an assigned number of points each quarter, based on their reading placement test at the beginning of the year, usually ranging between 9-35 points. This number of points should reflect about 30 minutes of independent reading per day. They are usually given about 10 minutes per day in class to read, and are expected to read an additional 20 minutes each day outside of school.
They will receive two grades each quarter for their independent reading, one for the percentage of their Points requirement earned, and one for their percent comprehension of the books they have read.

THE MORE THEY READ, THE MORE THEY KNOW.
THE MORE THEY KNOW, THE MORE THEY GROW!
