Welcome to Quail Run's K-3 Reading Website!

Our goal in the K-3 Reading Room is to provide students with an additional reading period during the school day.  They work with books that are at an independent or instructional reading level.

Reading is like any other activity that we do.  The more you practice, the better you get!

The students work  in three areas during their reading class.  These areas are:

PHONICS:  We work very hard to help these students with their phonics skills.  All of our students practice their letter/sound relationships by reviewing the Fundations Program that is also taught in their classrooms.  They get a second, shortened presentation in our program.

SIGHT WORDS:  We reinforce the basic sight words that are the glue in
our reading and writing.   These words comprise about 65% of everything that
is either read or written.  These words are called "trick words" within the Fundations  Program. These are words like:  the, and, is, are.

3909_92240_5.jpg   READING LEVELED TEXTS:  This is where the students have to put everything together and read.  Depending on the focus of the book, this is the where we work with comprehension skills and literature elements, such as setting, characters, problem, solution, and sequencing.  Fluency is also an important part of this segment.

READ NATURALLY:  For the intermediate student, Read Naturally is a research-based fluency program that has been adopted district-wide.  It uses high-interest,  non-fiction articles.  Students choose an article.  The teacher does a "cold read" for a minute using a timer.  The student then listens to the article several times using a CD player.  Then, they practice reading the article until they can meet their pre-established goal.  When they are ready, they return to the teacher to have her time them again for their "red hot timing."  It is amazing to see the improvement after a few readings.  They begin to hear themselves "reading naturally" for the first time!  It is exciting to see!
