Welcome to Mrs. Getman's
Second Grade Class
Welcome to the world of second grade! I am looking forward to a year of fun and growth with your youngster. It is my belief that the classroom atmosphere must be structured enough to maintain order, while flexible enough to allow for individual styles and creativity. Students should be treated with respect and in turn they should be expected to treat others with respect. All children should feel safe, welcome and encouraged to learn.
Second grade focuses on reading strategies in whole group and small guided reading groups. I include hands-on, center based instruction to reinforce skills in reading, art, language, math, science and social studies. Some of our Core Units include: the human body, Westward Expansion, Geography of Americas, United States government and symbols, Ancient Civilizations of Asia (India and China), Ancient Greece and Japan, Weather, Life Cycles and Insects. The math emphasis is on basic math facts, place value, time, money, graphing, measurement, and geometry.
I look forward to working with you and your child. It is my belief that parents and teacher working together as a team will provide the optimum learning for your child.
