SEVENTH GRADE LANGUAGE ARTS
KAREN BAKER - November, 2009
LITERATURE: We will be reading "THE GIVER," in my Honors English class and "THE GIRL WHO OWNED THE CITY," in all other classes. Students will be practicing and applying reading strategies. Assignments for these novels will be completed in class. Any unfinshed work may become homework.
SPELLING AND VOCABULARY: Spelling words for this month will be introduced at the beginning of each week. Students are responsible for defining the word, using it in a semantic web along with several other spelling activities. Students will also be expected to demonstrate and understanding of the vocabulary words taken from the novels we are reading.
Students will be responsible for learning the stems and their meanings. A quiz will be given on Friday
HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE: The history of the English language will be reviewed with the spelling lessons.
GRAMMAR: We will be reviewing the parts of speech in class. Students will be responsible for keeping track of them in their interactive notebooks. Our Interactive Notebooks will be set up Cornell style. Ask your child about this method.
WRITING: Students will be working on writing a business letter. My Honor's class will be writing science fiction stories. These are due Friday, November 6th.
STUDY ISLAND: Students will be taken to the computer lab to work on Study Island each week. It is also recommended that students work on Study Island at home at least once a week for 45 minutes.
BOOK PROJECTS: Expectations for Book Projects will be discussed in class. The due date for the next book project is November 12th.
