If a child lives with approval, he learns to like himself. - Dorothy Law Nolte

What is a Game Day Quiz (GDQ)?
Game Day quizzes are an opportunity for students to demonstrate their mastery of concepts learned in class and practiced in homework over the course of a week. (Sometimes, two weeks depending on the pace of the concept.)
Material for the GDQ comes directly from math homework practice. In reading, GDQ’s are usually review of grammar, Latin stems and/or vocabulary.
Math Practice Homework Choice:
A word on math practice homework: I have given students a choice… if they are comfortable with the concept and can show mastery of the top 10 hardest problems (of their choosing) the math practice homework then they do not have to complete the entire page of practice.

About Mrs. Warner
August 17, 2009
Dear Desert Trails Parents:
I am thrilled to be your child's honors teacher. Gifted education is my passion and empowering, challenging and supporting gifted students has been my professional goal since entering the education field nearly 10 years ago. I have been a gifted cluster teacher in 1st, 3rd and 6th grade at Cactus View Elementary School prior to joining the Desert Trails team. Before becoming a classroom teacher, I completed many long-term substitute teaching assignments in a variety of Paradise Valley schools and disciplines.
As a promoter of life-long learning, I earned a Journalism degree from Grand Canyon University in 1991 and worked in sports/media relations prior to being a stay at home mom and substitute teacher. In 2005, I added a teaching certificate to my resume and in 2007, a master's degree in curriculum, instruction and assessment. In July 2008, after completing advanced hours in gifted education, I eagerly added a gifted endorsement to my teaching credentials. I am also certified in Structured English Immersion (SEI) strategies.
In the last two years, I presented at the Arizona State Gifted Conference and led professional development classes for Paradise Valley and Deer Valley educators that promoted teaching gifted students in the regular classroom as well as meeting the needs of the gifted student. Additionally, I have been fortunate to attend national conferences such as Supporting the Needs of the Gifted (SENG), KAGEN Cooperative Learning and most recently this past June as a PV nominee, the Phil Mickelson/Exxon Mobil Teacher's Academy. The Mickelson Academy promotes critical thinking, problem-solving and higher-level math and science instruction for third through sixth grade students.
As a teaching professional, I believe:
-~ children learn most naturally through curriculum integration
-~ social interaction with others is vital
-~ children thrive in a fun, structured and nurturing environment
-~ brain-based learning is essential to retaining knowledge
-~ children should be actively involved in the learning process
-~ expectations must be high and attainable
-~ and children are responsible for their own actions.
In addition, my teaching philosophy is that students must be provided experiences that promote inquiry and higher-level thinking in order to own, apply and retain their learning. My classroom culture is one that fosters cooperative learning that is empowering and encouraging. I believe collaboration with parents and colleagues is paramount for student, teacher and school success.
Personally, my husband Dave and I are parents of two amazing daughters. Both have been recipients of gifted education curriculum at the elementary school level and are now International Baccalaureate students. My youngest, Shea is a 7th grade IB student at Vista Verde Middle School and Nathalie is a 9th grade IB student at North Canyon High School. As a family, we enjoy traveling, sporting events, technology, music and our spoiled puppy, Abbey.
Finally, I have very high expectations both academically and behavioral for each of my students. I am anticipating a wonderful year of discovery and success as we team to encourage your child's learning.
I thank you in advance for your home efforts and support. Please feel free to contact me at 602-449-4100 or email at ewarner@pvschools.net.
Most Kindly,
ElizaBeth Warner
