What’s New in First Grade?
Imagine a place where optimum learning occurs, and everyday learning is fun: the first grade classrooms at Arrowhead are special places where effective teachers focus on the required curriculum and the standards in a manner that maximizes student achievement and ensures that learning is exciting and meaningful.  Additionally in a effort to maximize literacy progress for all student the first grade teaching team has collaborated to assess and to flexibly group all first grade students. Word study literacy instruction, based on individual needs, entails the use of developmentally appropriate activities and strategies with a primary focus on maximizing literacy progress for all learners.  In addition, word study addresses all aspects of a balanced literacy program including reading, writing speaking, listening, viewing and presenting.  Furthermore, our first grades enthusiastically read scholastic books, keep books, as well as colorful issues of National Geographic, Young Explorer!
The first grade team has also implemented flexible math groups, which concentrated on addition the first half of the year and now are focused on subtraction.  We are excited to be working with Mrs. Salmins our math specialist and Miss Davis our reading specialist who are helping us to provide productive teaching and learning experiences for our students.
Finally, our students have appreciated the varied field trip excursions specifically chosen to link classroom learning to the real world.  To extend our love of the arts, we attended the Nutcracker Ballet in December and are looking forward to our Phoenix Zoo trip scheduled for March 16th where are science and social studies lessons will come to life.  We are looking forward to our trip to Horse Lovers Park on February 23rd and a special visit from Mrs. Barncastle’s farm friends in March which all tie into the Black Stallion Literacy Project.  The project began in January when each child got to meet “Little Black and “Big Red” two horses from Christy Hattfield’s stable and received the book Little Black a Pony.  The program will also provide the children with Little Black goes to the Circus; both are valuable books to help our students enhance their enjoyment of books and reading.
