Vista Verde Middle School Chapter
National Junior Honor Society
We are part of a national organization whose purpose is to:
- Create enthusiasm for scholarship
- Stimulate desire to render service
- Promote leadership
- Develop individual character
- Encourage strong citizenship
Membership:
Students whose grade point average was 3.8 or higher are invited to apply for NJHS membership at the end of 7th grade. Sixty candidates were inducted during a ceremony in May 2009.
Requirements to retain membership include:
Maintain at least 3.8 gpa each grading period
Complete minimum of 25 hours annual community service
Attendance at monthly meetings
Service on a NJHS committee
NJHS Committees:
Food Drive Committee collects/sorts food for Deer Valley Emergency Food Bank. This year's drive will be held the week of Nov., and volunteers will work onsite at the food bank throughout the Nov. and Dec. holiday seasons.
Environmental Committee explores projects for conservation/recycling on campus and in the community
School Improvement Committee develops projects
for improving VVMS and increasing academic performance of its students
Community Improvement Committee conducts other local volunteer projects, including service to retirement centers, animal shelters and children's organizations
Fundraising Committee sponsors fundraising events on campus to benefit one local charity, one nationwide and one international nonprofit organization designated by ours chapter
Publicity Committee conducts communications and promotion for all NJHS projects

President Sai Shah presides over meetings; is referred to as Mister President.
Vice President Matt Bear presides over meetings when the president is absent.
Secretary Paige Vanden Heuvel keeps meeting minutes, chapter correspondence and calls roll.
Treasurer Trevor Smith tracks and reports on chapter finances.
Parliamentarian Brandon Valdivia assures conformance to policies and meeting procedures.
Historian Darya Shahgheibi takes photos to document NJHS programs and projects.
Advisors Ms. Van Fleet and Ms. Everts serve as counsel and champions for the VVMS chapter.
