Miss Becky’s Pre-K

My name is Miss Becky and I will be your child’s pre-K teacher for the 2009/2010 school year. I have worked with Community Education since 1997. I have worked with all age groups but enjoy the pre-K kids the most. I can’t wait to get to know all the kids and have a great school year full of learning and fun.

I have 2 wonderful assistants. My morning assistant is Mrs. Poach. Mrs. Poach is new to Desert Trails this year, but has worked for Community Education for 9 years. Mrs. Poaches hours are 7:30AM to 1:30PM. She helps with Hawk Club before school starts. We are glad to have her with us. Ms. Katelyn is my afternoon assistant and her hours are 11:30PM to 5:30PM. She helps with Hawk Club after school hours. This will be Ms. Katelyn’s 2 year with Community Education and here at Desert Trails.

Drop off and pick up

When dropping your child off in the morning you will walk them to the multi purpose room (the doors closest to the school office) and wait there until a teacher comes down with the sign in/out book. Then the teacher will walk the kids down to the classroom. The earliest you can sign your child in if they are not in Hawk Club is 8:40AM.
When picking your child up at 2:45PM will be on the Kindergarten playground. We will walk the kids down to the kindergarten playground with the sign in/out book. We will be on the playground from 2:30 - 2:45.
If you need to pick your child up during school hours you will need to check in with the front office. The same goes for dropping off in the morning after 8:45AM.

Sign in/out

Signing your child in and out each day is very important. Since we are a licensed program they have to be signed in by who ever drops them off and signed out by a person on your child’s blue card. The sign in/out book will be in the multi when the teacher brings it down. If you drop off after 8:45AM or pick up before 2:45PM it will be in the classroom.

Blue cards and Picture ID’s

Everyone filled out a blue card when you registered your child. It is very important that you keep the blue card up to date with any information that changes. If your child attends Hawk Club you will need to update Hawk Clubs blue card as well. Remember that if something happens and we need to get in touch with you we get our information from the blue cards. We may not release your child to any one who is not on the blue card and who can not show picture ID. Please bring your picture ID with you daily to pick your child up. Even as we get to know each other there may be a time that a sub is here and will ask you for it. If you are sending someone else to pick your child up please make sure they are on the blue card and that they bring a picture ID. You can add as many people you would like to your blue card. If it is just a one time thing you may tell us in person or call and we will ask for your secret code that you put on the back of the blue card. It might be a pain or seem like a lot but it is all for your child’s safety.

What to send to school

There are a few things that your child should bring with them. A backpack is very important. We try to send something home daily so you can see a piece of what your child is doing each day. Please send a change of clothes including socks and underwear. Just in case they have an accident or get messy. You can send the change of clothes in a bag with your child’s name on the bag (zip lock bags work great). When the weather starts to change we will ask that you take the summer clothes home and send in warmer ones.

Not to bring to school

Please do not allow your child to bring toys or valuables to school with them. We have plenty of toys in the classroom for everyone to share. I know kids love to bring in stuff to show their classmates, but we will have show-n-tell days threw out the school year. I will send a note home when it is your child’s turn to bring something in.

Rest time supplies

We do have a rest time, it starts out an hour long and as the year continues we start to shorten it.  By the end of the school year when your child is closer to becoming a kindergartener rest time will disappear. We provide every child with a mat and a sheet. Your child may bring a small blanket (receiving size preferred), a small pillow (travel size preferred) and a small stuffed friend that does not make noise. These items will be sent home weekly for washing.

Snacks and Lunch

We provide a morning and afternoon snack. A monthly snack calendar will be posted on the parent board in the classroom. Lunch can be brought from home or bought in the cafeteria. Each child will have a student account available for parents to pay on line or you can send a check or money and we will make sure it goes on your child’s account. Just so you know the class walks down to the cafeteria together and the teachers are always there with the kids. One teacher is at the table with the kids who brought lunch and the other teacher walks the kids who are buying lunch threw the line and helps them if needed. It is very important that the children know they may not share or trade food at any time.

Your child’s health

If your child shows evidence of a fever of 100 degrees, has had a fever within the past 24 hours, has a rash, diarrhea, vomiting or heavy nasal discharge, he/she should be kept home until they are free of all these symptoms for 24 hours. Should a child become ill during our time, the parent/guardian will be contacted to pick them up. If your child needs medication during school hours you will need to contact the school nurse and then of course let us know so we can walk the child to the nurse.

Curriculum

Little Scholars is a Core Knowledge program that emphasizes readiness skills for kindergarten in a developmentally appropriate way. The lesson plans for each week will be posted on the parent board and web site. All activities are developmentally appropriate for pre-kindergarten children and presented in interesting and fun ways. For the rest of August we will be getting to know each other and the school and getting to know the school rules. A few things we will be doing in the class is our ABC’s, counting, measuring, sorting, painting, drawing, writing, matching, singing, reading stories, and learning to play together. The last 2 years we have gotten together with a 5th grade class and they call them their buddies the kids enjoyed it so much so we will continue to do that this year starting in September. We get together once every other week and they help us with projects or we just have fun.
.
Communication

Occasional newsletters and notes will be sent home to keep parents informed about classroom activities, needs, and events. They will be sent home in your child backpack or on the sign in/out sheets. I will have a class web site with information about the class as well. Parent/teacher conferencing is done informally throughout the school year by phone or appointment. Student’s progress is assessed and a copy is provided to the family three times each year.

Thank you,
Miss Becky
