Wildfire Health Office Guidelines
Purpose :
This purpose of this website is to provide information to parents in regards to health and safety of students in the elementary school setting.
Guidelines for when to keep an ill child home:
Students should be kept at home if they are ill with: fever above 100 degrees currently or in the last 24 hours; vomiting or diarrhea during the night or the morning of school, even if just one time; an uncontrollable cough; red, crusty eyes or eyes with drainage present; a headache not controlled with over-the-counter pain medication; or an undiagnosed rash illness. If you are unsure if your child is too ill to send to school, please call your physician for advice. If your child does complain of an illness, and you decide that the child is well enough to attend school, please use positive encouragement to let them know you believe they will be well throughout the school day.
Guidelines for medication needed during the school day:
If your child has been placed on a prescription medication that needs to be given during the school day, please bring the medication in its original container to the health office. A medication permission form must be signed by the parent to administer medication. If your child regularly needs an over-the-counter medication, please double check the labeling to make sure it gives dosing directions for your child's age. Bring the medication is its original package. The nurse must adhere to the package instructions given for age or weight; if your physician has suggested a larger dose for your child, it must be written on a prescription form and provided to the school. A medication permission form must also be completed and signed by the parent before over-the-counter
medication can be administered.
PE excuses :
Parents may write a note excusing their child from PE for only 3 consecutive days. The note should be brought to the health office before school starts, and a PE excuse will be given to the teacher and PE teacher. Longer excuses will be given only if accompanied by a physician note. When a physician note is presented, a note must also be written when it is time to resume PE activity.
