The
first grade classrooms at Village Vista follow a
traditional, structured and integrated curriculum
plan. We also adhere to the Paradise Valley School
District Scope and Sequence and the Arizona State
Standards for first grade. Our weekly schedule includes
reading, spelling, grammar, writing, math, social
studies and science. Our special area classes are
art, physical education, music and computers.
Scholastic publishes our reading program. It incorporates
reading, grammar, spelling and writing activities.
It is a phonics and phonological awareness based
program. We encourage as much reading as possible
at home by having parents read to their children
as well as having the child read to the parents.
Our school has a Bookworm Home Read Together Program
that the students enjoy participating in. They keep
track of time spent reading and are rewarded in various
ways for their efforts at home.
Harcourt publishes our math program. Some of the
basic math concepts introduced and reinforced in
the first grade program are addition and subtraction
facts, story problems, time, measurement, place value,
money, and calendar concepts.
Through an integrated curriculum we cover our social
studies, science and health areas. With our Make
Your Day Citizenship Program, personal responsibility,
independent work habits, study habits, study skills,
and social interaction are practiced. The desire
and need for first graders to be social is also recognized
through cooperative learning opportunities with a
structured environment.
A final word...Establishing an effective
parent/teacher relationship and good study habits
at home will increase your child’s success and self-esteem. It is
important to show interest in your child’s
school work. , praise them for successes, and approach
difficult tasks with positive encouragement. Take
the time to simply enjoy your child. We do! |
