There is no other time quite like being a “First Grader!” We are excited about sharing this special time in your child's life with you and your family. It will be a year filled with growth and rewarding experiences. A whole new world will be opened to your child through reading, writing and math. Every child can succeed and will be successful in first grade at Sonoran Sky. First grade's comprehensive curriculum includes:
Programs in music, art, media/technology, and physical education are also provided to students at Sonoran Sky. Trained specialists not only teach essential skills relative to their special areas, but also work with classroom teachers to plan learning experiences, which enrich classroom curriculum and assist children in discovering their own strengths and talents.
Phonics
First graders will experience
phonics through the district adopted fundations program. back
Each student is assessed through the District Project Read Program to find their individual reading level. Through guided reading, the child moves forward to become a successful and fluent reader. Children are also exposed to grade level text through the Scholastic Literacy Program. Families are encouraged to read a minimum of two hours outside the school day to fulfill the Literacy Challenge requirement. back
Writing is woven throughout the curriculum as the students learn to apply the writing process. Interactive writing is a tool used to teach good writing and spelling strategies. Students practice their writing skills everyday by journaling. back
Spelling words are introduced beginning second semester. back
Math
The district math program
is Hartcourt Brace. It incorporates critical thinking, problem solving
and mastery of basic math facts. We flex group for math according to the child's ability level. back
These subjects are incorporated within the first grade curriculum. back
An assignment sheet will go home with your child every Friday in their Friday Folder. Students are required to read a minimum of 20 minutes per night and write in a home journal once per week. Other assignments will be attached to the assignment sheet.
Friendly Friday - Students invite an adult friend to come read with them in class once a month. The schedule will be provided by the teachers.

Twenty-four No. 2 plain pencils (sharpened)
Two hard cover composition books-Please put their name on the outside of each one. One 8 oz. bottle of white glue
Fifteen glue sticks
Fiscar scissors
Two double pocket folders. One take home and one for their desk. Please write their name on the front.
A box of 24 crayons
A set of WIDE felt tip markers
Two boxes of Kleenex
Colored pencils
A one inch three ring binder (PLEASE- No Trapper Keepers)
One bottle of liquid soap or hand sanitizer
Two boxes of Ziploc plastic bags (gallon and sandwich size)
Four WIDE dry erase markers
A large
white eraser
4 highlighters (different colors)
NO BACKPACKS WITH WHEELS!

A box of gallon size Ziplock baggies
Earbuds or headphones – an inexpensive pair, nothing fancy. (Young
children tend to have trouble with earbuds, so you may want to consider
headphones.)
An inexpensive clipboard
One small pencil sharpener with lid
Six folders - the type with two pockets
One container of Clorox wipes
One box of baby wipes (we use these to wipe off our hands after messy
Science projects)
A 3 inch 3-ring binder
A set of 5 divider sheets with tabs to fit in the 3-ring binder labeled:
SPELLING, MATH,
SOCIAL STUDIES, SCIENCE & LANGUAGE ARTS (one subject per divider
sheet)
One ream of notebook paper
Two single subject notebooks and one composition notebook with your
child’s name on the cover
Sharpened pencils
A pencil eraser (the small, square pink type works well)
A plain ruler with inches and centimeters (no bendy rulers, please)
No backpacks on wheels, please! They are very dangerous.
No hard pencil boxes, please! No Trapper Keepers, please!
