The Sonoran Sky PTO welcomes and encourages members of the school community to actively support a wide variety of programs and functions at the school. Please contact any of the executive board members or your teacher for more information on these and other volunteer opportunities.

Volunteer Opportunities

Book Fair-Sonoran Sky holds 1 book fair every year in the fall. There are volunteer needs in set up, staffing the fair, and break down. If you love to read and help kids pick out books, this is the job for you!

Spring Carnival- Volunteers will be needed to organize the rides and entertainment, staff the rides and booths, set up the day of the carnival, sell tickets, and clean up following the event. This is an opportunity for many of our community members to be involved and help this event run smoothly and safely.

Communication-Volunteers will work with the PTO Executive Board member to gather information from staff, parents, and the community for distribution in both the Navigator and the school web site.

Copy Cats-This group of volunteers is greatly appreciated by the staff at Sonoran Sky! Volunteers learn how to use the workroom copier. They help make and distribute teacher requested copies throughout the year.

Enrichment- Committee members will work with PTO Executive Board member to implement a wide range of for-fee classes before or after school in an effort to provide a wide range of educational opportunities to Sonoran Sky students.

Field Day-This committee will work with our PE teacher to help coordinate volunteers for field day. Volunteers are needed to staff each event.

Health Office-Our nurse looks for parents to help with annual health screenings that include height, weight, vision and hearing. These volunteers are most needed at the beginning of the year.

Hospitality-The volunteers on this committee will assist the PTO Executive Board member in the planning and hosting of teacher/staff luncheons. There are several of these events during the year.

Kids Night Out-This is a great event for parents who like to spend time with their kids and their kid’s friends! The volunteers for this event make it possible for our kids to have a night of fun, and their parents to have a night of relaxation. This is a wonderful community building night.

Lost & Found-This committee works together to keep our lost & found under control. Once a month, volunteers go through the lost & found and return anything with a name on it. Items with no names are donated to a less fortunate school.

Marketing-This committee will work with the PTO Executive Board member and administration to devise and implement marketing strategies for our school. This is a great committee for someone with marketing experience and a creative spirit!

Media Center Helpers-These volunteers will help the media center staff with shelving books as they are returned. This would require a once a week commitment.

Reading Specialist Helpers-These volunteers will assist our Reading Specialist, Jamie Caldwell, with various tasks throughout the year. If you love to read to others, this is the job for you!

Retail/Box Tops-This committee will be responsible for the distribution of information regarding retail programs that provide funds to the school from purchases made at their establishments.

Restaurant Nights-Sonoran Sky usually plans restaurant days/nights around the Staff Development half days. If you have any connections with restaurants, or if you have some new restaurants in mind, please sign up for this committee. Requirements: make plans with restaurants & deliver flyers to the students.

School Pictures-These volunteers will work with the school picture coordinator to provide assistance to the students, staff, and photography staff on school picture days. This is a full day commitment on the day of pictures. Volunteers may also be asked to assist with the distribution of pictures as well.

School Store-Volunteers will work with the school store chairpersons to staff the school store-which is open once a month during the lunch hour. Our children really look forward to this!

School Tours-If you love Sonoran Sky and are always telling your friends about it, this is the perfect job for you! Tours are held each Thursday @ 9:30 am. Tour guides are trained by Jeannine Ziomek.

Secret Garden-The Secret Garden is our students’ publishing center that is staffed solely by volunteer parents. Every student has the opportunity to publish a book each year. Some of the jobs in the Secret Garden include computer entry of books, assisting the students in the process, interacting with staff, and binding of books. This is a good job for people who love books and are creative.

Washington Mutual-Every Wednesday is Washington Mutual Day at Sonoran Sky. Students have the opportunity to open savings accounts through Washington Mutual. Parents help staff the school “bank” every Wednesday in the cafeteria. Students can make deposits each week. Volunteers work with the coordinator to plan a schedule for the year.

Yearbook-This group of volunteers will work together with students and staff to produce a yearbook for all community members to enjoy! If you are creative and would like to be a part of creating a lasting keepsake for our kids, this is the committee for you. Volunteers are also needed to help promote, collect orders, and distribute the yearbooks.
