Subject Areas - Exceptional Student Services

As students enter school, all children have an initial screening done for the purpose of identifying areas of concern. As students progress, parents may request staff to help solve their child's educational problems. Exceptional student services include:

Resource Programs

The individual needs of all special needs students are met through the process of identification, evaluation, placement and the provision for needed and required programs and related service. All parents and students are provided with procedural safeguards, due process, confidentiality, and the right to a free and appropriate education.

Reading Specialist

Our full-time Reading Specialist has been trained in the very effective strategies of the Reading Recovery and California Early Literacy Learning program. Through individual student as well as group assistance, classroom support, and teacher coaching, the Reading Specialist supports the literacy goals of the school.

Nurse

A registered nurse is assigned to each school on a full-time basis. The primary objective of the Sonoran Sky nursing services is to strengthen the educational process of students by assisting them to improve or adapt to their health status. Because a student in ill health cannot learn to the maximum of his/her ability, it is our goal to promote an environment that fosters positive physical, social and emotional health. Along those lines, the nurse also serves as the building Prevention Coach. A number of special programs and services have been developed to assist students with special needs in these areas.

Auxiliary Services

Psychological services, speech, occupational therapy and programs designed for students with special needs are also available. In addition, a Student Study Team regularly meets discussing and assessing special needs of students whose names are recommended by the classroom teacher and parents.

English Language Learner

A trained ELL teacher supports the academic needs of all identified students. She is on campus each morning.
