Attendance & Tardy Policy
en
Español
Regular attendance is not only an essential part of your child’s
learning process it is also key in their pursuit of a quality education.
Students should remain out of school only when absolutely necessary,
as much of the classroom activity cannot be made up. The benefit
of lectures, discussion, and participation is lost forever to those
who are absent. Attendance is the responsibility of both the
students and parents. Here is how to help your child be successful:
If Your Child is Absent |
What number do I call if
my child is absent? |
Please call our attendance hotline:
602-449-3069/ 3070 , which is available 24 hours
a day |
When do I call if my child
is absent? |
A parent must call the day of absence. If
no call is received, Shadow Mountain calls home that evening
using the auto dialer to your home number. A parent must
call within 24 hours of the absence to excuse the absence. (For
example, if son or daughter is absent on a Monday, we need
a call by 2 p.m. on Tuesday) |
What happens if there is
no call to excuse the absence by 2 p.m.? |
The absence becomes unexcused or
marked as a truancy. If a student accumulates
four truancies and is under 16 years old, they may be cited
into C.U.T.S. and fined a $50 assessment fee. Students
over 16, may be dropped with a failing grade and placed
in study hall. Students will not be given credit for
work missed during truancies. |
How many excused absences can a
student have? |
A student can accumulate nine excused
absences per semester. Any additional absences after
nine will require a doctor’s excuse or note and is considered
excessively absent. If no note is given, the absence
turns into a truancy and after four truancies,
the student may lose credit in that class. Credit
will not be given for work missed when a student is marked
truant. |

If Your Child is Late
or Tardy |
What happens if my child is late
for first period? |
School begins at 7:30 a.m.
- If your child arrives after 7:30 a.m. and before 7:40
a.m. your child is to go straight to the front office,
present their school id, and receive a yellow “admit-to-class” pass. This
pass does NOT excuse them from being tardy.
- The only acceptable excuses for tardies are medical,
legal, or dental. Parent phone calls will
not excuse the tardy.
- If your child arrives after 7:40 a.m. they are marked
absent and sent to class.
- Consequences for first period tardies will
be issued at the reception desk and students will be
expected to attend lunch detention on the day of the
tardy. After the 4th first hour tardy,
a meeting with the Dean of Students will take place
and other consequences may include Saturday or after
school detentions.
- SMHS does not excuse
late arrivals. In the case of a late bus, students
will be given a pass to class without penalty.
|
How does the tardy policy work
for classes other than first hour? |
- Students have six minutes to get to class. If
they are late, they report to class and are marked tardy. Teachers
will assign lunch detentions for each tardy.
- After the fourth tardy, a meeting with the Dean of Students
will take place and other consequences may include Saturday
or after school detentions.
- If students arrive ten minutes after the tardy
bell without a pass, they will be marked truant. Truancy
consequences then apply.

SMHS believes that academic success requires attendance on a regular
basis. Regular attendance is an essential part of the learning
process and state law requires it.
AZ LAW
The state of Arizona requires
that all students attend school 90 percent of the school year. PVUSD
students attend school 180 days per year, which means that a SMHS
student has nine sick days a semester. When a student reaches
nine absences a semester, a doctor’s note may be required to
excuse any further absences.
A student whose absences may have materially affected academic
progress may fail that course, receive a lower grade, or be dropped
from the course. Students
must carry a minimum of four classes in order to be enrolled
as a full-time student.
When a student has 5 or more unexcused absences, the student can
be cited to a Court Unified Truancy Suppression Program (C.U.T.S.)
and cited a $50 assessment fee. Consequences through the Maricopa
County Juvenile Court can include: suspension of student’s
driver’s license or inability to get a driver’s license
until their eighteenth birthday and/or formal court proceedings.
What happens if I am truant?
- Students who are truant will NOT receive credit for work on the
day/period of truancy.
- A truancy is an unexcused absence or anything over 10 minutes
late to class.
- Parents will be automatically notified by the SMHS phone dialer
system.
- Lunch detention, after school detention and/or in school suspensions
will be issued.
- You may be dropped from class with a grade of an “F”.
- You may be cited $50 to C.U.T.S.
What if I’m tardy to first hour?
School starts
at 7:30 a.m.
- Students tardy to FIRST PERIOD MUST go straight to the
front office, present school I.D., and receive an “admit-to-class” pass. This
pass does NOT excuse student from being tardy.
- If you are tardy to first period, you will be issued a 20-minute
lunch detention from 11:40-12:00 in room #953 to serve the same
day of the tardy.
- PVUSD does not excuse late arrivals unless it is medical, legal
or dental. Phone calls will not excuse a tardy.
- Over ten minutes late is a truancy.
What about second- to seventh-period tardies?
Six
minutes are given between classes
- Under ten minutes late is tardy.
- Teachers will issue lunch detentions for second- to seventh-periods.
- After the fourth tardy, students will serve after-school or Saturday
detentions.
