The Center for Research in Engineering, Science and Technology — CREST — breaks ground
Ground was broken Monday, November 2, in anticipation of construction for CREST — the Center for Research in Engineering, Science and Technology — a small, specialty school located on the campus of Paradise Valley High School. The school will provide students with three specialized programs including: Biotechnology -- Research and Development; Biotechnology -- Sustainability; and Engineering. The courses in these programs focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics education. CREST specialized courses will encourage and prepare students to follow their interests into the workforce and college. The City of Phoenix is providing a grant of over $3 million to PVUSD for CREST, with additional support from West-MEC (Western Maricopa Education Center District) and The Foundation for Public Education supporting PVUSD. CREST will open in August 2010 with a select freshman class of approximately 150 students.
THANK YOU for supporting PVUSD students on November 3
The PVUSD Maintenance & Operations Budget override measure was passed by district voters, allowing the district to increase the budget by 10 percent. Yes votes were 19,238; No votes were 12,361. The measure passed with 61% of the votes.
What will the M&O Override do for our students?
Help to decrease class sizes for more individual student attention; provide instruction for technology, physical education and fine arts (music, art, etc.) to students; give additional assistance in reading, writing and math to students; offer competitive salaries to attract and retain highly qualified teachers and staff; and promote a safe and healthy school environment.
Flu clinics — pre-registration available online
As the vaccine becomes available, schools will schedule flu clinics for the H1N1 (Swine) and seasonal flu immunizations. Parents may pre-register their children at www.flushotsusa.com. Select Schools-Zap the Flu at schools option and follow the prompts to select Paradise Valley Unified School District and then the PVUSD in which your child is enrolled. Only students enrolled at the school where the immunization clinic is taking place can receive the immunization at that school, due to Maricopa County Health Department regulations. Information about scheduled flu immunization clinics at your child's school will be sent home with students as soon as available. Remember to be vigilant in efforts to keep school communities and your home environments flu-free with good hygiene and keeping kids home when they are sick.
Around the District
Julie Abbamondi from Campo Bello Elementary School has received the distinguished designation of Finalist for the 2009 Rodel Exemplary Teacher Award. The Rodel Charitable Foundation of Arizona created the Rodel Exemplary Teacher Initiative to address the shortage of effective teachers in Arizona’s neediest schools and maximize students’ educational experience one classroom at a time

Three PVUSD schools, Campo Bello Elementary (principal Janice Moore), Echo Mountain Intermediate (principal Bennett MacKinney) and Echo Mountain Primary (principal Cynthia Daniels), were presented with Beat the Odds Bronze Awards by the Phoenix-based Beat the Odds Institute, for academic improvement. The criteria for this award includes effectively implementing research-based leadership principles school-wide and receiving at least a “Performing” AZ LEARNS label from the Arizona Department of Education.

Superintendent and state legislator take part in ABEC’s Shadow the Superintendent
Across Maricopa County, several school superintendents and state legislators are pairing up for the Arizona Business & Education Coalition's (ABEC) Shadow the Superintendent program. District 6 Representative Carl Seel shadowed Superintendent James P. Lee and had the opportunity on November 4 to discuss education and learn about the many opportunities available in the district..
Legislators spend at least four hours interacting with school superintendents, staff members and students and see how education policy plays out “on the ground.” Superintendents have an opportunity to learn more about legislators’ views and concerns when it comes to education. To date, 30 pairs of superintendent and legislator are participating and scheduling will continue throughout the fall. Shadowing is taking place throughout Maricopa County, as well as in other counties, statewide.
