Fourth Grade
Fourth grade is the first of the intermediate grades at Quail
Run. This is the level where students move from learning
to read, to reading to learn. Understanding how to use
our textbooks and other resources for information is an important
part of our learning.
Our budding writers will develop
personal experience narratives, essays, poetry, and research
reports. Math is a very big part of our day, with standards-based
instruction in the areas of multiplication and division, algebra,
geometry, probability, and fractions, supplemented by Excel math. Excel,
a school-wide program, couples a lesson with daily homework,
reinforces mathematics skills, and teaches problem-solving strategies.
As
with all fourth grades across the country, our social studies
curriculum focuses on learning about our great state, but we
also study geography and civics. Field trips supplement
and enhance our social studies curriculum. Our students
learn the scientific method through inquiry-based units on land
and water, and electricity and magnetism, as well as studying
weather and climate, and life cycles.
Another important
facet of our daily practice is Accelerated Reader, a school-wide
program that reinforces and supports a life-long love of reading
both for pleasure and understanding.
Truly, fourth grade
is an exciting and enjoyable year for our students!
