Academic Problems???
Parent, what you can do!
1. You can call 480-419-4400 and request a meeting with you student’s advisor/counselors. A meeting with the teachers may be the outcome. This is a good way to get first hand information from the teacher about your student’s progress.
2. Make sure that your student is spending time at home studying/doing homework. Your student should spend at least an hour outside of school reviewing notes, reading, or working on projects. Every student received a weekly planner at the beginning of the school year. Please go over it with your student and make sure your student is using it to write down the homework assignments and the upcoming project/test dates. It’s also a good idea to look over you student’s binder to check for organization skills and to make sure that it is being properly used.
3. Ask your student to speak to his/her teachers if the student is having difficulty in class or to see what options are available to raise the student’s grade. You student has to request the help! Tutoring is available at the ITC Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings 7:00 am – 7:40 am. We also have an after-school study program. Contact Mr. Clancy for more information. 480-419-4403
4. Sometimes it’s necessary to take the time off of work and come to school with your student and sit in every class. This has helped reduce behavior issues and it gives the parent the opportunity to see the environment of the student. If this is an option you are considering, call the counseling secretary and let her know so she can get authorization from you student’s assistant principal.
5. Participate in the Booster Club and any organization that promotes parent involvement in the school.
6. Sometimes there are family problems or personal problems that keep the student from focusing. If this is your case, please consider counseling. You can ask your family doctor for referrals or you can attend a community-based program. We will have an updated brochure on-line soon.
7. Please read the Parent Newsletter that is emailed every other month. You can check for upcoming events and it will notify you when the grading period is over and when to expect the next progress report.
8. We recommend that you call the attendance office and check on your child’s attendance. Sometimes students get a friend to call and clear the absence.
9. Make an appointment with your child’s counselor to find out if your student is credit-deficient and if summer school is needed. We will also discuss other options to get your student on track for graduation.
