Arizona Nutrition Standards
K - 8 Food Standards:
- 35% or less calories from fat
- 10% or less calories from saturated and trans fatty acids (combined)
- No more than 35% sugar by weight
- Must contain at least 1 gram of fiber
- Maximum 400 calories per serving for entrée items sold as ala carte
- Maximum 300 calories per serving for all other items
- Maximum 800 mg sodium for entrée items sold as ala carte
- Maximum 600 mg sodium for all other snack items

Entrée guidelines
- Maximum 400 calories

Beverage standards
- Water may contain natural or non-caloric sweeteners
- Juices must contain no less than 50% fruit and/or vegetable juice
- Fruit smoothies must contain no less than 50% fruit or fruit juice and maximum 400 calories
- Sports drinks are allowed
- Fruit juice drinks/ades are allowed
- Tea drinks are allowed

Specific Prohibited Foods and Beverages
Foods: Final preparation method cannot be deep fat fried
Beverages:
- Fruit/vegetable drinks contain less then 100% juice
- Whole fat milk; flavored or regular
- Caffeine/energy drinks
- Carbonated beverages
- Sports drinks (PowerAde® or Gatorade®) are permitted in middle schools only and cannot exceed 12 oz. serving size
Exceptions:
- Cheese (must be reduced fat), nuts, and seeds may exceed fat and saturate fat standard
- Fruits, vegetables and dairy (does not include fluid milk) may exceed sugar by weight standard
- Dairy and jerky are exempt from fiber standard
A.R.S. 15-242 became effective July 1, 2006, and applies to all K-8 schools. The nutrition standards apply to all foods served or sold during the school day. Food Plan

PVUSD Nutrition & Wellness received the District of Excellence distinction in 2009. This award is granted to child nutrition programs by the School Nutrition Association for exhibiting best practices and program quality. PVUSD is one of only 28 districts nationally and the only in Arizona to currently hold this distinction.
