LANGUAGE ARTS AND READING
The Harcourt program offers a variety of literature and expository texts. The selections encourage reading comprehension and fluency. Skills and strategies are taught in the context of literature. The literature the students read is a model for writing. The grammar, usage, mechanics and spelling instruction comes directly from the reading and writing lessons. The language arts program focuses on the student as a writer using, as a guide, the Six Writing Traits and Step up to Writing. Individual weaknesses are corrected and individual strengths are reinforced. Among many forms of writing, the students will provide examples of personal narratives, reports, communication, and poetry. Students will master writing both upper and lower case cursive letters.
MATH
Students will review addition and subtraction. They will learn multiplication, division, fractions and decimals, forms of measurement, and geometry. An emphasis is placed on hands-on activities and problem solving.
SCIENCE and SOCIAL STUDIES
Students will investigate life cycles, energy, properties of the Earth, and the contributions of famous scientists. All students will participate in weekly Scientist of the Week experiments. In social studies, students will be taught mapping and graphing skills. The study of communities and it's citizens will be a curricular focus. We invite occupational speakers from the community into the classroom to share their real world experiences. We also incorporate current events on a weekly basis into our curriculum.
