The Honors/Gifted program
at North Ranch serves students who score at or above the 97th percentile in
one or more reasoning areas: verbal, quantitative, and non-verbal. The curriculum
is designed to ensure not only the learning of grade level skills in literature
and/or mathematics, but also the acquisition of problem solving, research, and
critical thinking skills through high academic challenge in these areas. Qualified
students in third through sixth grade receive academic replacement services
with Mrs. Brown, the North Ranch Gifted Specialist in literature and mathematics.
Students in kindergarten through second grade are serviced through a Cluster
Classroom Model. Mrs. Brown works closely with the Cluster teachers to ensure
that appropriate differentiation is available for these students.
Math students participate in contests funded by PVUSD Gifted Department. The Math Olympiad team, which consists of the 5th and 6th grade Honors students has won high honors for our school for three years in a row. We are very proud of the efforts of these students. Mrs. Brown and the Honors students also celebrate mathematics during an extensive geometry unit. Pi Day, March 14, is highlighted with Pi Day songs, grade level competitions to see who can memorize the most digits of Pi, special circle activities, and of course, PIE. Students in 6th grade are provided a Pre-Algebra curriculum to prepare them for the rigors of Algebra at the Middle School.
Reading students are challenged through a variety of genre activities. Literary elements are a strong focus at each grade level. Junior Great Books, novel units, KidBiz and TeenBiz are utilized to expand student comprehension strategies. Vocabulary development is a key component of the literature program. Third through sixth grade students study Latin and Greek stems as well as Classic Vocabulary using the Michael Clay Thompson Vocabulary materials.
Simulations, problem-solving units, and much more fill the days rapidly as the Honors students work to develop and enhance their skills. The curriculum is fast-paced and ever-changing to meet the needs of the students.
