As a school, we are using the Scholastic Literacy Place Program. This program incorporates the Four Block Multi-Method approach. This includes: Guided Reading, where children receive direct, small-group instruction using a variety of reading materials; Self-Selected Reading, which provides students the opportunity to read a wide range of literature independently; the Writing Block, for which the teacher models various writing skills which the children then apply; and finally, the Working with Words Block, and active, hands-on activity in which children learn to read and spell high frequency words and learn the patterns which allow them to decode. Teachers work with the whole class, small groups, and individuals to meet the needs of different reading levels within the classroom. Writing skills are taught and reinforced throughout the day with the Write From the Beginning program. Activities include journal writing, student authored stories and books, and lessons from the Scholastic program. |

We use the Harcourt math series which utilizes a hands-on approach. Emphasis is placed on real life skills such as problem solving, graphing, estimating, and patterning. In first grade we cover the basic skills, including addition and subtraction 1-20, counting by 1's, 2's, 5's, and 10's up to 100, symmetry, measurement, money, place value, and telling time to the hour and half hour. Concrete materials and games are continually used along with drill and practice of the basic addition and subtraction facts. |

These areas are taught using weekly or monthly themes which are integrated into daily reading, writing, and math activities. Scott Foresman curriculum and Foss Kits are used for science activities. The Scholastic News Magazine provides additional exposure to current events. Our new social studies program is Scholastic. |
