Tax Credit form
2008 Tax Credit Deadline - To receive 2008 tax credit, it must be turned in to the Bookstore by December 19, 2008, or mailed to North Canyon High School no later than December 31, 2008. Checks should be made payable to North Canyon High School.
Arizona tax law (ARS 43-1089.01)
allows a tax credit* for contributing to extracurricular
activities in public schools. Extracurricular activities
such as intramural sports and after-school clubs generally
are not fully funded by school districts. These programs
depend on fees from students. Your contributions go
directly to support your child and North Canyon High
School, not the state or the district.
This tax credit is available to all taxpayers, even
if they don't have children in school. Grandparents,
aunts, uncles, working older children, and friends
who pay Arizona taxes equal to or in excess of the
credit amount are eligible.
You may deduct $200 for single and head of household
or $400 for married taxpayers. Taxpayers that file
married/separate returns can claim only one-half of
the credit on each return.
To claim the tax credit, taxpayers
must contribute to an extracurricular activity. At
North Canyon High School, this may include after school field
trips, sports, some performing arts programs, and
a category identified as "other". You may
elect to choose 'other' for a portion or all of the
donation. This money will be used to underwrite the
expense of all school programs sponsored by North
Canyon High School.
If you would like to receive the tax credit for your
child's fees...
- Pay in person at the NCHS bookstore
or print out form (in PDF format) and mail it
in along with you contribution. You will be mailed
a receipt for reporting purposes.
- On the form, indicate how you
would like your donation to be credited.
- Keep your pre-numbered
receipt for use when filing your 2008 Arizona state
tax return. You will receive a full credit for your
contribution from the state.
- Please pay by check or
money order as we can't accept credit cards or cash
for this. (Paper trail needed.)
Donations must be made to the bookstore prior to December
19th (last day of school first semester) or must be postmarked by December
31st to be eligible and must follow the specific extra
curricular criteria identified in the law to be eligible
for the tax credit.
Field trips during the school day
are not eligible for the tax credit.
FAQS:
What is a tax credit?
This is a tax credit, not a tax deduction. A tax credit is a dollar-for-dollar reduction in the actual tax owed. For example, if you owe $900 in state income taxes and you donate $400 to a public school for extracurricular activities, you may subtract the $400 from your tax bill and pay the state just $500.
What is an extracurricular activity?
Extracurricular activity means any optional, non-credit educational or recreational activity that supplements the education program of the school. Activities such as sports, visual and performing arts, special programs, field trips, character education, clubs or outdoor education can be funded with tax credit money. Extracurricular activities help children develop qualities such as leadership, team play and cooperation as well as provide safe, supervised activities after school hours.
Who is eligible?
This tax credit is available to all Arizona individual taxpayers regardless of whether or not they have children in school. An individual can contribute and receive a tax credit for any amount up to $200, or a couple filing jointly can contribute up to $400.
Does all of my money go to extracurricular activities?
Yes, 100 percent of your donation goes directly to the schools for extracurricular activities that benefit students by enriching campus life and learning. None of the money is used for overhead.

449-5018 if you have any questions.
* Contributions to public schools have always been tax
deductible. A tax deduction allows you to subtract
the amount of a contribution from the amount of your
taxable income. This law allows a tax credit, which
is subtracted from the amount of taxes you owe.
