A Peek Inside Our School
There are many ways to broaden a student’s school experience. It may be through a special program, project, or opportunity. It can happen inside the classroom or outside of it. At Mercury Mine, all members of the school community contribute their ideas, talents, and enthusiasm, bringing our students unique opportunities to learn and grow. Here is just a sampling:
Starting school should be fun, that's why Mercury Mine hosts a special adventure for incoming kindergartners each year. The event is held in February and invites future kindergarten students to come and explore Mercury Mine. Families and children meet the principal and teachers, but best of all take an expedition through the Mine in search of the riches that lie within (maybe even that legendary M.M. gold!) It gives little miners a chance to see the school, have some fun, and get excited about starting school in the fall. Parents have a chance to pick up registration information and ask questions. So, if kindergarten is in your near future, watch for this event. Then, grab your gear and join our expedition to Kindergarten!

For two years 5th grade teacher Jeff Collins has given students a rare chance to perform original research in conjunction with N.A.S.A’s mission to Mars. The group gets to explore space, astronomy, and even receive credit for discovering something new about the planet. Working with the A.S.U. Mars Student Imaging Project (MSIP), Mr. Collins guides the teams through specially prepared curriculum and activities. The highlight is a trip to ASU where they take a never-before-seen image of the red planet. Following that, they prepare a report and make a presentation at school. Not many 5th graders can lay claim to this kind of fame, but Mercury Miners can! Click here to learn more about the ASU project and link to the education programs.

Teachers and parents work with students to bring botany, biology and more to life with special projects carried out in the school's gardens.
Classes grow, harvest and taste fresh grown produce from their gardens, incorporating it into some of the class curriculum. Whether it is seed identification for Science, making lettuce wraps for Enrichment, or writing poems about butterflies for English, the outdoor garden experience enhances the lessons.
The staff, students and parents were very active in creating the beautiful entrance to our school — with our solar powered fountain and xeriscape design welcoming everyone to Mercury Mine!

Throughout the year the school’s stage plays host to a variety of class acts (literally and figuratively!) Presentations range from 4th Grade Poetry Readings to the 3rd Grade’s Buck-a-Roo Review, and 2nd Grade's World of Celebrations. When parents get into the act and help out, the scene is set for some fabulous backdrops, amazing costumes, and lots of lights and music. The Multi-Age class play and the famous 5th Grade play are two especially popular and lavish productions that rely on teamwork and the talents parents provide. Thanks to an overwhelming spirit of fun and cooperation, at show time students step onto stage in parts they and the school will not soon forget.
