READ 180 is a reading intervention program designed to meet the needs of students who are reading below grade level.  The program directly addresses individual needs through adaptive instructional software, high-interest text, and direct instruction in reading and writing skills.  Its software component uses assessment data to differentiate instruction by continuously assessing and adjusting according to studentsí needs and learning rate.  During the 90-minute reading block, students are provided with whole group instruction, which builds studentsí reading, vocabulary, and writing skills through teacher-directed lessons.  They also receive small group instruction, instructional software, and modeled and independent reading time.  This comprehensive instructional model provides students with rich and engaging curriculum of skills instruction that meet their individual needs.

Understanding Accelerated Reader at Indian Bend

Using Accelerated Reader involves a student selecting and reading a book.  The student then uses a computer to take a Reading Practice Quiz on the book.  The Accelerated Reader program keeps track of the quiz results and generates reports for the teacher and the student.  The idea is for students to read books that are appropriate to their reading level.  The Reading Practice Quiz a student takes after reading a book shows the student's comprehension of the book.  The student earns points based on the book's point value and how well he/she did on the quiz.

Using Accelerated Reader can give each student the instruction and reading practice they need and motivate the student to take responsibility for their own learning.
Our Read Naturally lab provides students with strategies to improve reading fluency.  It combines teacher modeling, repeated reading, and progress monitoring in a small group setting, where students spend most of the instructional time engaged in the act of reading.  The structure of Read Naturally allows students to work at their own level, with support from continual teacher conferencing, monitoring, and adjustment of goals to maximize student learning. Students also receive instruction and support with comprehension strategies that help students read for understanding.

The Make Your Day Citizenship Program is an understanding that EVERY STUDENT HAS THE RIGHT TO LEARN IN A SAFE ENVIRONMENT.  It demonstrates that teachers hold high expectations for all students and is a cooperative citizenship program.  NOT MERELY A DISCIPLINE PLAN.  MAKE YOUR DAY CENTERS ON ONE RULE: NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO INTERFERE WITH THE LEARNING, SAFETY OR RIGHTS OF OTHERS. Please see related link on Parent Resource Page to gain a better understanding of the program.
MATH LAB
Indian Bend has a Math Lab where students come with their class to explore math activities.  Students use the many manipulatives to tackle math concepts using a problem solving approach.  The Math Lab is a complement to the regular math program.  Recent visitors to the math lab include Kindergarten students working on the discrete math concept of combinations and first graders who came to show off their newly acquired skills with counting money when they went shopping at a store.  (They got to keep what they purchased!)  Fourth graders also came to work with Power Polygons and explore geometry concepts.

HOMEWORK CLUB
Homework Club is a 50 day program sponsored by Title I, state money, and tax credit donations.  The program began in October and ends in March.  It is more than a homework program.  It is meant to extend the school day for students needing more time reaching mastery on reading and math standards.  Indian Bend teachers provide instruction in reading using programs such as "Soar to Success" and math instruction using the "Excel" program, in addition to providing help with homework.

FAMILY MATH/LITERACY NIGHT
The Indian Bend Title I Program provides quarterly Family Literacy and Math Nights.  Families are first invited for a pizza dinner and then the families stay to work on Math and Literacy concepts.  Sometimes the parents receive information about specific objectives the students are studying in class or they learn techniques to work with their children.  Information about testing is also shared.  Activities are provided so that parents can work with their children on concepts talked about that evening.

SUMMER SCHOOL
Summer School:  There are two summer school opportunities at Indian Bend.  The first program, a district program, under the No Child Left Behind initiative, is by invitation only.  Students "at-risk" of not meeting reading grade level mastery are invited to the program that runs from the Wednesday after Memorial Day until the fourth week of June. The Voyager Reading Program is used.  The program runs Mondays - Thursdays from 8:30 - 1:30.

The second opportunity is a "Jump Start" to the new school year.  This is for any Indian Bend student who would benefit from getting back into the school routine before the regular school year starts.  This program is only for Indian Bend students and runs from 9:00am - 12:00 for ten days before school starts. The program focuses on reading, writing, and math standards but uses a thematic approach to get students excited about learning. The last Jump Start theme was "Planting a Seed" and the students actually planted a garden!  Please contact Mrs. O'Neill if you have questions about either summer school opportunity.
