CERTIFIED EDUCATIONAL INTERPRETER

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High School Diploma or GED.
  2. Associates Degree, IQAS rating Level 3, RID Certificate, or interpreter training program graduate preferred.
  3. Experience interpreting in an educational setting.
  4. Ability to interpret/transliterate at a normal conversational rate in American Sign Language, and Straight-English signing.
  5. Ability to work with other personnel such as teachers, principals, speech therapists, classroom aides and nurses.

REPORTS TO: Director of Special Education

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Uphold and enforce school rules, administration instructions and regulations, Board policy and state regulations.
  2. Assist in normal classroom routines and procedures by clarifying concepts, reviewing lessons assigned, and actively guiding students in the completion of required work as directed by the teacher and related service staff. Activities may include:
    1. Preparing specialized materials
    2. Daily checks of specialized equipment.
    3. Small group or individualized instruction
    4. Administering/scoring of assessment instruments
    5. Implementing behavior policies and strategies
  3. Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality.
  4. Serve as liaison between the Hearing Resource program and mainstream programs by keeping both parties informed of students’ needs and activities.
  5. Refer regular education staff questions and/or problems concerning the hearing impaired student to the Hearing Resource teacher.
  6. Take notes when not required to interpret or arrange for a note taker for the hearing impaired student.
  7. Participate in meetings as a member of the educational team as requested.
  8. Provide assistance to classroom teacher when student is absent or during interpreting "down time", making certain that the student's communication needs take precedence.
  9. Other job-related duties as assigned.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Nine, ten or twelve-month year. Salary and work year to be established by the Board.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Support Services Personnel.
