I would like to share some information about Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which recently has been the focus of news media reports. MRSA is a common germ that many people have in their bodies with no ill effects. It is not spread through the air; it is spread by direct skin-to-skin contact. In some cases, it may be spread through indirect contact with contaminated surfaces or items like razors, bar soap, athletic equipment and towels.
MRSA transmission can be prevented by simple measures like hand-washing and keeping infections covered with clean, dry bandages. Other steps families can take include using liquid soap when showering, thoroughly washing personal items like towels or athletic equipment after each use, avoiding sharing personal items like towels, sports equipment, razors, bar soap, etc. If any member of your family has a wound that will not heal or appears to be infected, you should consult a health care provider.
