Dr. Courson's letter to 8th grade parents

8th grade students who are home schooled or attending a private school...

A list of the items that need to be brought in to us for a registration appointment can be found here. You can bring these items to the Counseling Office beginning the week of February 2. At that time you will receive a registration packet to fill out. The student will need to obtain signatures on the registration card for placement from his/her current 8th grade teachers. After signatures for placement have been secured, you will call the Counseling Office (602) 449-6015 to schedule a registration appointment.

Since we receive many questions regarding our advanced academic programs, more information can be found here. This brochure outlines those programs and their advantages if they are appropriate for your student. If you have questions before registration begins, please contact our counseling office at (602) 449-6015.

Counselors to meet and greet 8th grade parents/students

Horizon counselors are meeting with incoming freshmen.  Appointments are being set up and will continue to be made through the first quarter of next year.  Please watch for a letter with an assigned day and time.  If you haven’t received your letter, please be patient, you will receive one.  If you are unable to attend during the scheduled time, please refer to the paragraph containing the phone number to reschedule.

During this 20 minute meet and greet time, we will discuss what high school is like and go over a plan for your student for the next four years.  We will also answer any questions or concerns that students as well as parents may have.  Our desire is to make sure your student knows that counselors are their advocates here at school and here for everything, not just problems.  We wish to get to know each of our students; this will be a great start.

School-student-parent collaboration takes time and work, but the reward is tremendous.   School involvement is critical for successful academics as well as adjustment for the student as well as the parent.   When you receive your letter, please mark your calendars and plan to attend.

Regarding open enrollment acceptance...

If your student is currently at a middle school in the Paradise Valley School District, and has been approved under open enrollment, you will not need to set up a registration appointment. We will simply use the registration card that will be provided to you by the counselor at the middle school during the scheduled high school visitation.

For Paradise Valley School District students other than incoming freshmen, you will be provided a registration card for Horizon. You will obtain signatures for class placement and that card will be sent to Horizon for the Horizon counselors to place you in the appropriate classes.

If your student is currently in grades 8, 9, 10, or 11 and not at a school in the Paradise Valley School District, and has been approved under open enrollment, it will be necessary to set up a registration appointment with a counselor. A list of the items that need to be brought in to us for a registration appointment can be found here. These items can be brought into the Counseling Office beginning the week of February 2. At that time you will receive a registration packet to fill out. The student will need to obtain signatures on the registration card for placement from his/her current teachers.
