Identification and placement
Testing for gifted children
takes place three times a year in accordance with the Arizona
State Mandate. Paradise Valley Unified School District
primarily uses the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) and
the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT) to identify
gifted students.
Students may be nominated for testing
by parents, teachers, principals or any other member of
the school staff. Information for nominations and testing
are available from the school’s gifted
specialist. Gifted

Parents will sign a “Permission to test” form,
and return it to the Gifted Specialist prior to the testing
of their child. The gifted specialist will schedule the
test time for the student.
Students in PVUSD qualify for gifted services by scoring
at the 97th percentile or above on any one, or combination,
of the verbal, quantitative, or nonverbal sections of a
state approved test (See the ADE
State Approved Gifted Test List). Students of special populations may be considered
for gifted services through the use of a matrix that considers
student achievement scores, native language and any disability.
