Welcome to Desert Cove Elementary School's online center--the Cougars invite you to explore, learn, contribute, and grow with us. Here's where you'll find out all about our school and classes, print forms to enroll, get helpful advice, read the latest newsletter, or find out about upcoming events. The Cougars thank you for visiting us and invite you to contact our office to make an appointment to meet our staff, see our classrooms in action, or take a tour of our campus.

From the Principal:

Thank you to all of our students, parents and staff for a very successful beginning of the 2009-2010 school year.  Despite the challenges presented by budget issues impacting our community, it was reassuring to see the excitement of our students as they began the new school year.  As a student-centered school, the staff of Desert Cove will continue to do our best to provide a safe, enriching and challenging learning environment for all of our students.

Please ensure that you have established firm arrangements for your child’s arrival and departure from school.  Notify the school office as early as possible about any changes in your daily routine.  Remember that supervision of children begins at 8:15 a.m. and ends at 2:45 p.m. daily. Children should not be on campus outside of these hours unless a parent accompanies them.  Students may report to breakfast in the MPR beginning at 8:00 a.m. daily.  Thank you for watching out for our children and observing traffic and parking rules to ensure the safety of all of our students, families and staff.

There are a few changes to note with the newsletter for this year.  In addition to our usual information, we will also be providing monthly updates from our PTO, UPC and School Council. By combining our information into one newsletter, we can provide for you more complete and concise information while saving resources.   Thank you for your support of our efforts to provide a quality educational experience for our students.

Tom Ellinghausen

A few words from Thomas Ellinghausen, our principal:

Desert Cove Elementary is a K-6 elementary school located in the heart of the Paradise Valley Unified School District. Our commitment to excellence in teaching and student enrichment is reflected in our top-tier test scores, increasing student enrollment, and ongoing teacher education ensuring that every student receives the most from their formative years at Desert Cove. Our student-teacher ratios guarantee every student gets the attention he or she needs to reach their educational goals and exceed the state standards.

We are also excited about the expansion of our before and after school programs that enrich and enhance the regular curriculum. Because of tax credit donations, we are able to offer a broad range of learning activities such as Jason Science Club, DC Read, Read Naturally, Read and Create, and the CIMI Catalina Island trip for our sixth graders.

Don’t forget that Desert Cove also offers both the Mascot Club before and after school program through community education and the Phoenix Activity Club (PAC) after school program.

Please take a few minutes to tour our website and bookmark it for future visits. I think you'll find that Desert Cove is a great place to grow a child!

PVUSD Parent/Student Handbook

Mission Statement:

The Desert Cove staff, in partnership with parents, will provide an atmosphere of educational excellence with high expectations for children. We will be accountable for their success in a comprehensive primary program and their transition to higher levels of schooling. Effective instructional leadership will facilitate the cooperative development of programs to achieve these beliefs.

Our beautiful new Desert Cove Elementary School and adjoining campus is complete. We are extremely excited to enter a new building with approximately 30, 000 additional feet of learning space, upgraded security, safety and technology, and all of this comes in a more energy efficient facility. I am very proud of the patience, flexibility, and effort of all members of our community that enabled us to make our transition into the new building a complete success. Desert Cove is a source of pride and a great place for kids to learn and grow!
