Medium/Heavy Diesel Technology
Taught at Freightliner, 9600 Roosevelt Street, Tolleson
Western Maricopa Education Center announces enrollment opportunities in Medium/Heavy Diesel Technology in cooperation with Freightliner. Students will study diesel engines, brakes, suspension & steering, electrical/electronics, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, hydraulics, preventative maintenance, leadership and safety. Classes will be held Monday thru Friday from 1-3 p.m. in 2009, and Monday thru Friday 7:30-10:30 a.m. in 2010.
Applications are available from high school guidance counselors and College & Career Center Specialists, and are due back February 2, 2009.
Prerequisite: Students must be age 17 by end of junior year and must have reliable transportation. Student must be available to participate in paid summer work internship the summer between their junior and senior year. Student must commit to approximately 900 hours of training during the last two years of high school.
Credit: 3 high school elective credits per year
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
To be held at Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC), or Estrella Mountain Community College (EMCC), or Glendale Community College (GCC) if student chooses.
Description –The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program will teach students the fundamentals of life support and first responder skills. This program, which is a partnership between West-MEC (Western Maricopa Education Center) and Paradise Valley Community College, Glendale Community College or Estrella Mountain Community College, will provide real-world, interactive medical training from leaders in this field. Upon completion of this fast-paced program, students are eligible to take the National Registry Exam to become certified Emergency Medical Technicians. PVCC Classes will be held from 1:40-5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and start in August, 2009. Applications may be obtained from high school guidance counselors, and College & Career Center Specialists; they are due back February 2, 2009.
Prerequisite: Students must be a senior in high school and be on track to graduate Spring, 2010. Student must be 18 years old by May 2010, or have teacher approval to take the course. Student must pass a reading assessment at one of the community colleges and have proof of immunization for measles, mumps, rubella, a negative test for TB, and a clean drug test. Also, student must pass a background test.
Credit: 12 college credits; 2 high school elective credits; eligibility to take the registry exam for EMT Certification.
Cosmetology
To be held at Maricopa Skill Center, 7565 W. Peoria
Description –The Cutting Edge Style Academy cosmetology program will teach students the latest techniques of hair, skin and nail care. This program, which is a partnership between West-MEC (Western Maricopa Education Center) and Maricopa Skill Center, will provide personalized, hands-on, industry standard instruction in a salon style setting. At the end of the two-year program, students who complete the required 1600 hours will be able to take the State Board of Cosmetology exam to become certified cosmetologists. Class schedule is Monday through Friday, 4 hours/day, with a choice of Session I, 7-11 a.m., Session II, 11:45a.m.-3:45p.m., or Session III, 4-8 p.m. The choice of session is “first come first serve.” Student fee for the student kit, supplies, and books is $1200, with a non-refundable down payment of $100 due March 13, 2009. Students must work with their high school guidance counselor to coordinate high school courses with the cosmetology course. Guidance counselors and College & Career Center Specialists have applications, which are due February 2, 2009. Start Date: Summer 2009.
Prerequisite: Student must complete 10 high school credits, including 2 credits in English, before their junior year. Student must have reliable transportation. Students must have a tax ID number, or social security number for training hours to be sent to the State Board of Cosmetology.
Credit: 3 elective credits per semester

Building Trades
To be held at 2950 W. Thomas Road
Description: Western Maricopa Education Center announces enrollment opportunities in Building Trades for students in their senior year of high school. The program is in cooperation with the following trades: Pipefitters, Insulators, Heating/Ventilation and Air Conditioning, Bricklayers, Ironworkers, Operating engineers and Sheet metal workers. The program will be held in several locations with the bulk of the instruction being at 2950 W. Thomas Road, Phoenix, Arizona. The program will be held in the fall semester only and operate on Monday and Tuesdays from 1-5 pm, Wednesdays from 1-3 pm, as well as some Saturdays. A summer internship of approximately 250 hours of paid work experience will be made available during the summer between the junior and senior year. Students may earn 3 high school credits and be eligible to apply for an apprenticeship program at age 18. $25 lab fee. Classes start August 10, 2009, end December 9, 2009. Guidance counselors and College & Career Center Specialists have applications, which are due back to them by February 2, 2009.
Prerequisite: Student must be a senior in high school, have reliable transportation, pass a drug test, and pass a trade related math and reading test. Students must have Tax ID number or social security card.

Fire Science

at Paradise Valley Community College
Description –Western Maricopa Education Center announces enrollment opportunities in Fire Science located at Paradise Valley Community College 18401 N.32nd Street, Phoenix, Arizona for junior or senior students. Juniors who take the program may sign up for the EMT program their senior year. The content will include the following; concepts of fire protection, fire department organizational functions, fire prevention, fire service based emergency medical service, firefighter safety and firefighter employment. The program will be held during the fall semester on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30-4:30 pm. student may earn 1 high school elective credit and 6 college credits. Start date August 10, 2009. Monday through Friday, 1 pm-3 pm. Lab fee $25; $88 for textbook: Fundamentals of Fire Fighter Skills. Students will earn 6 college credits, and 1 high school credit. Applications are available through high school guidance counselors, and College & Career Center Specialists, and are due back February 2, 2009
