Since the Art Masterpiece program began in the fall of 2003 at Grayhawk Elementary School, it has been our mission to foster a love of art and encourage art appreciation. Art Masterpiece is an art enrichment program in addition to the special areas art class. Our many volunteers aid in developing a child’s imagination, help them invent new connections among the five senses, develop creativity, and help one to understand different cultures. Volunteers and students explore art together as they talk about wonderful artists, study their incredible art masterpieces, and then create their own amazing artwork!
In line with our Core Knowledge Curriculum, our students, staff, and volunteers have learned about different artists – their lives, art styles, and art movements. We have explored beautiful art masterpieces and how they have changed the way we view the world. We have incorporated history, language, math, science, music, and movement in our adventures in art. Our students have done independent art history studies through our various art research contests and Art Mysteries game. They have also created their own original art inspired by the artists and art masterpieces they studied in order to better appreciate and understand art.
Our program is very privileged to have the continued support and generosity of our principal, the Grayhawk PTO, our teachers, our staff, and, of course, our awesome volunteers!
Become an Art Masterpiece Volunteer
You don't have to be knowledgeable about art or be a great artist yourself. All you need is a desire to help children and have fun! Depending on the grade level, Art Masterpiece volunteers present a program about an artist once a month. This involves giving a short overview about the artist and their style (there are prints available on all of the pieces presented that hang in our hallways to share with the students), showing some samples of his/her work, and leading the class in a simple art project that reflects the featured artist's style. Please Contact Kathy Stratton at klstratton@cox.net for more information about being a presenter or to volunteer.
