Welcome to the art program at Vista Verde Middle School. For the 2008-09 year, there are two different courses offered: seventh grade foundations and eighth grade visual arts. A course description, outline, and list of project due dates for both courses are listed below. Have a great second quarter!

SEVENTH GRADE FOUNDATIONS
SYLLABUS

INTRODUCTION
 This is a 9-week course in which students will learn how to draw, paint, and design compositions. Techniques and concepts students will learn this quarter are:
- How to create value to make the illusion of 3-D objects in black and white.
-How to create the illusion of space by showing perspective.
- How to mix colors, create color spectrums and color schemes.
- How to create realistic figures (people) in motion.
- How to create good designs.
- How to critique artwork and write an art criticism essay.
- How to take notes in the Cornell note-taking format.
- Students will learn about different artists and art eras.

SUPPLIES; DEVELOPMENTAL WORKBOOK
Supplies students will need are:  #2 pencils with erasers, a one-subject notebook, glue sticks, colored pencils, and a good attitude.  Students will store all of the warm-ups, class notes, quizzes, preliminary art, and written work in the notebook.
IB STUDENTS NEED TO SAVE THIS WORKBOOK IN ORDER TO INCLUDE IT IN THEIR PROCESS PORTFOLIO FOR HIGH SCHOOL.  100 points at the end of the quarter 

VISUAL ART PROJECTS
Students will be required to complete 4 final visual art projects.  100 points each

LATE WORK
Late work will be accepted: for each day it is late, the grade will drop one full letter grade.

HOMEWORK
Students will have 3 homework assignments this quarter (students should post each assignment in their workbook).  50 points each

ESSAY

Students will be required to write one art criticism essay.  Students will be expected to write about art as well as make art! 100 points

QUIZZES
Students will have OPEN NOTE, short -answer quizzes at the end of each unit. (5 questions)  50 points each
 
CLASS PARTICIPATION

Students are expected to participate in all class discussions and activities.  25 points each

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES:
Every day, students will be expected to complete a warm up in their notebooks and copy down the objective and activity for the day.

At the beginning of each lesson, students will be part of a class discussion in which students will be expected to take notes in the Cornell format in order to understand what they are learning and why they are learning it.  After class discussion, students will watch a demonstration to learn how to do what they are doing.  The rest of the lesson will be devoted to (art production) studio time in which the instructor will guide students through work time
Students are expected to come to class prepared, be ready to learn and work, and have a good attitude.  DISRESPECT TO ANY INDIVIDUAL WILL NOT BE TOLERATED!!!! Students are aware of the ABC discipline policy, which is used school-wide.  
Every student has the right to have access to a safe, learning environment.  No one has the right to interfere with learning, safety or well being of others.
Music, from the radio only, will be permitted during studio time.  Headphones or other electronic devices are not allowed in class.
****ELECTIVE CLASSES ARE NOT "SPECIALS".  THIS IS A CLASS LIKE ANY OTHER SUBJECT;  STUDENTS  WILL BE EXPECTED TO TAKE NOTES, READ, WRITE, COMPLETE HOMEWORK, AND TAKE ASSESSMENTS  UPON THE INFORMATION  THAT IS  GIVEN.  THIS CLASS CONTRIBUTES TO A STUDENT'S  GRADE POINT AVERAGE.

SYLLABUS FOR EIGHTH GRADE ART:
INTRODUCTION
This is a semester course in which students will learn about Fine Arts  and Commercial Arts. Students will learn how to draw, paint, and design compositions. Some of the other topics covered in this class are: graphic design, typography, and fashion. Art history, math, science, language arts, and social studies will be integrated within the visual arts curriculum in order to meet state and national art education standards.

Techniques and concepts students will learn this quarter are:
- How to create value to make the illusion of 3-D objects in black and white.
-How to create the illusion of space by showing perspective.
- How to mix colors, create color spectrums and color schemes.
- How to create realistic figures (people) in motion.
- How to create good designs.
- How to critique artwork and write an art criticism essay.
- How to take notes in the Cornell note-taking format.
- Students will learn about different artists and art eras.
- How to create realistic portraits (human faces) in frontal and profile views.
- How to draw from life.
- How to effectively use type in design.
- How to create a cohesive fashion line.
- How to use markers, paint, colored pencil, chalk pastel, oil pastel, and graphite
