7th Grade Social Studies/Humanities

Hello everyone. I've gotten a few emails lately regarding grades in my classes. This year I switched to a "weighted" grading system in which there are categories. I did this to avoid having issues at the end of quarters when I have papers/projects/tests that I want to seem important, yet needed to be worth 100 points in order to impact grades. Please note that Community Service is a large chunk of their grade. Since few have turned it in, it is not factored into most students' grades. Instead, each of the other categories has increased in value. Once Community Service grades are entered (it's due on Dec 15th), then the grade weighting will be accurate.
Additionally, my website is one thing I want to improve on. I'd like to keep it up to date, however, the best way to get accurate assignments is to email me at dhonkamp@pvlearners.net. I've even scanned reading assignments and worksheets and attached them to emails when responding. Even as I improve with updating my website, class activities/topics may be off by several days. Therefore if a student is home and feeling well enough to do work, the best solution is always to email me.
IB News and Notes: We recently finished discussing the election. Occasionally we'll still discuss the outcome as we move closer to the inauguration.
Students have been actively doing their community service so far this year. I already have several students that have turned in their 10 hours for the first semester. They are due the last Monday of the first semester. As a reminder, the Community Service grade has two parts. One part is the service work and must be signed off by an adult or supervisor (yes, parents can count as long as they are willing to vouch for the student's work).
We are currently discussing the Civil War. At times we will be seeing segments from a number of videos/films, including: The Civil War (by Ken Burns), Gettysburg, and Gods and Generals. I also would ask that parents please show students the 1980s movie Glory. I cannot show it, as we do not have the educational version, and by 1980s standards it is rated R. But it is a fantastic movie with a compelling storyline. It also won many awards. If you are interested, parents can email me and I can provide the student with my personal DVD copy to view, but only upon parental request.
