AVID
Assignments:
Throughout the school year, the AVID class will participate in a variety of fun and exciting activites, lessons, and projects. We may also watch various movies to reinforce positive, hard-working attitudes, as well as to initiate Philosophical Chairs, Socratic Seminars, and group projects.
Guest Speakers:
This year the AVID class will have the pleasure of listening to various guest speakers on many diverse issues. If you would like to be a guest speaker in the AVID classroom, we would LOVE to have you. We are open to various topics, but love hearing about careers and inspirational or personal achievement stories. Please contact Mrs. Brooks (602-449-5300) if you are interested. We would love to have you!!!
Currently we continue to learn about what it means to be an AVID student. We are still focusing on binder organization, learning to take Cornell notes, and what it takes to have a successful tutorial. We started tutorials in October and the students have been very successful. We even have three wonderful tutors from the local colleges as well as an outstanding college graduate with a degree in education! They have been a big help. During all of this we are getting to know our classmates while working collaboratively.
Don't forget... we have our first AVID Parent Night coming up...
Tuesday, December 9th in the cafeteria from 6:30-7:30pm.
Hope to see you there !
English Assignment
During the first quarter, the students successfully completed Multisensory Grammar, which teaches grammar by using a variety of senses. Students will continue to use Write From the Beginning, as a way to focus and improve their writing and it's organization. Currently in second quarter we have begun the Rewards program, which teaches students to decode three and four syllable words. The student are reviewing their phonics skills to help them sound out these larger words, as well as learn to spell them correctly. The students seem to be enjoying the program so far. When we are not working on the Rewards program, we are completing a variety of writing assignments. We have written persuasive letters to the cafeteria lady to improve school lunches, as well as to Mr. Callahan, out assistant principal, discussing the school "No Gum" rule. After winter break we will be reading about Helen Keller and writing a three paragraph essay about our own "Secrt
Hideaway"!
Stay Tuned...
Study Skills
I check your child’s planner everyday for their homework assignments. I will try to check their grades at least once every two weeks. The students will be resonsible for printing off their grades to show me and for them to take home and get a parent signature. This is one way for them to check for any missing assignments.
This class is also a great tool for your child to get any extra help that they may need in a specific class. I am available to help then during the class period. Last, there will be weekly assignments or warm-ups that reinforce good study habits. Please encourage your child to use their time wisely while in here.
***If you ever have any questions or information, please feel free to e-mail me here at school and I will always get back to you: cbrooks@pvschools.net
